As an out of state hunter I'm going to pack in for a hunt for 8 days but where I'm parking might be on the side of a road is there do's and donts or is that frowned upon or legal?

Depends on where your going, type of road and a bunch of other stuff pertaining to local regulations.

Dirt road. my guess not traveled at all unless used for hunting. There is a camp site at the end of it but that is it. A few land owners on same road before my planed parking spot.

This. Too many variables to say unless you narrow it down. Is it a FS road? If so, that ranger district will publish a map that shows if you can camp on the road, and how far off the road it’s legal to park. Then you need to determine if landscape allows you to get off the road surface. If it’s not FS and is a county or state road, I’d say in general, no it’s not ok.

And it's not a dumb question. I think it's s good one.

If you find out what type of road it is, then you can get the rules. You will have possibly two sets of laws to deal with, local and federal.

8 days is awhile, parked in an unmarked spot. But being that it a hunting season. People will probably figure out you're a hunter.

I would probably just find the biggest, widest spot i can and head up the mountain.

You cannot park on the road. Assuming it is a Forest Service road, there is a 15 foot right of way on each side; so you can park on the side of the road (off the roadway).

Man, this day and age there’s a good chance your vehicle will be missing parts when you return after that long.

I’d try a different approach
Agree, legalities aside, I'd be more concerned about my truck still being there.

OK so if I find a trail head with parking that would be safer you guys think?

I'd say so. A lot of people coming and going and some camping at the trailhead as well. Some people choose to leave a note on their truck saying when they'll be back for safety reasons. If I were a thief, I'd probably pick that truck to break into.

Keep things out of sight to keep an honest man honest.

Call whoever manages the road. You're usually good as long as you aren't blocking gates or access.

I'll answer your dumb question with a dumb question of my own: What state are you planning to travel to?
