Lol that would not fly here in CA. I gotten "I hope you don't shoot me" from hikers on several occasions. It doesn't help that I like to hunt off the PCT and usually hike along it to get into bowls that hold deer.

what seems like a stupid reaction to us is only someone that probably has no clue what we're doing and is probably their first encounter with a hunter.
This happens all the time in an area that I sometimes hunt, often they are neighbors or people I know.
If people throw passive aggressive comments my way then I'll play the game and give it right back to them, rarely happens though.

"I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but I see you came unarmed". Dogs shouldn't be running unsupervised anyways on hiking trails. They stress the hell out of wildlife.

It’s funny you mentioned this. I almost shot a dog yesterday. Friend and I were hiking and scouting in the national forest, in an area with a lot of wolves and grizzly and not a popular hiking spot. Thick area of trees and brush in front of us and I see a big thing of dark fur running through the trees to us. I had spray and my gun but it was so close and being from the military I instinctively went for my sidearm. Which I ended up not unholstering once I realized it was a dog, probably a dark german shepherd mix and had a collar. But the owners were a few minutes behind the dog. Thankfully it wasn’t an aggressive dog and I didn’t end bad, but seriously during hunting season or in general I wish people would keep there dogs within eyesight when hiking. By the way they were completely oblivious to what almost happened.

It's almost weird to see a dog without a bell on it. Asking for it to be mauled by a bear that it surprises.... or coming sprinting back to you with one 20 ft behind it.

It’s all the rage these days: like catching fish on the lightest test possible, primitive weapons etc, killing an elk in the most heavily trafficked location possible takes the “DIY OTC public land archery elk hunt” ethos one sept further.

This is an opportunity to come across as a reasonable human being who happens to like hunting… Or as a defensive asshole. You pick. I realize that some of you guys are just Being humorous.

My response would be “I always make very sure of my target, and look carefully at what’s behind my target before I pull the trigger. I don’t want to hurt anybody, I just want to fill a deer tag.” The person you’re speaking to might be a dyed in the wool anti in which case you are wasting 10 seconds of your time, And one lung full of air. Or they might be somebody who is just not around guns and feels a little scared when they see somebody with a big effing gun.

As hunters it can be very difficult to believe that people can actually be afraid of guns, and afraid of hunters. But many are. As others have said, being reasonable and reassuring can be good for both communities.

Years ago I took my buddies kids and dog duck hunting. Dog went after a down bird other hunters shot. They threatened to shoot the dog. I informed them they would never leave the marsh if they did. Those kids are now grown but often remind me of this day.

I have had my many GSPs retrieve other hunters birds and bring them to me. I just tell them to keep track of the birds (dove) they shoot and I will gladly retune them. Some guys think it's great that they can just sit there in the shade and shoot, others not so much. Lets just say shooting my dog would not be a good thing. Not good at all.

I’m respectful and polite even if I really want to laugh at them - some people just don’t know any different. A simple “no worries, you’re safe” and a smile is my response when I get comments from non-hunters.
