I am heading down from Canada for a bachelor party in Phoenix in a few weeks and have an extra day. I will have a rental car and was wondering if there are any places where I might get to see a desert Bighorn in the wild?

I have had a pretty neat season and been on Rocky Mountain Bighorn, stone and dall hunts and think it would be really cool to see a desert bighorn.

Thanks in advance.

I was visiting my sister who lives in the Phoenix area last summer and asked her this same question. She said you have to go down around the Tucson area to see them. I think it's around 90 minutes away.

To the west along I-10 there are sheep in the Harcuvar Mtns, Eagle Tail Mtns, Plamosa Mtns and to the east there are sheep along Canyon Lake but don't know if you can observe from the roads. I would suggest you get in touch with AZ Game and Fish, Phoenix office and ask them the same question.

I don't mind hiking in somewhere, just would like a general area to go look! Parks and protected areas are fine as I don't want to interfere with hunters.

Canyon Lake outside of Phoenix would be your best bet I think. Rent a boat and break out the spotting scope on a tripod.

Just finished a hunt west of Phoenix. Two great rams were taken and the hunt is over so I would head west of Phoenix on i10 to the Salome road exit just west of the tonopah exit.. Take that road northwest about a mile and there is a canal, turn right. Go to the big bend and you will see a place to wal across the canal. Get up on the burm and there you go. The whole range has sheep all the way back to the hwy. hike away!!! It a wilderness area. No big rams in there but plenty of sheep.
