I hate DST. It’s rough on my kids. I hate to think about all the kids out there having to wait for a school bus in the winter, in the dark. Dangerous. I don’t hunt after work like eastern whitetail hunters do. I hunt when I draw a tag and then take the time off from work to hunt how ever many days I think I may or may not need. I would prefer it to get dark in the summer at 8:30 instead of 9:30. It’s friggin HOT! In the summer and it getting a little cooler in the evenings sooner would be nice.
I haven't researched it but are there statistics on lots of kids getting hit by cars (edited because I put cats the first time) walking to school in the dark? I mean the northern half of the country does it during the winter and we are also the once that deal with snow and ice. I would think the southern half could find a way to manage. It sucks to get to work in the dark, and have it be dark or damn near it when you get off work. . . I'm all for permanent DST but I doubt the house will do anything with it.

All the clock switching is bs. Especially in ak. Get rid of the shit. Make kids wear so damn reflective gear amd a head lamp to the bus stop. instead of black hoodies and jackets. I do not think there is any logical reason for it up here.

No reason school has to start at any specific time. They could adjust if the big concern is kids waiting in the dark.

Wouldn't things be a lot simpler if instead of letting politicians force everyone to change clocks, we simply adjusted our schedules to take advantage of whatever hour of sunlight is most important to us?

As I mentioned in earlier post, it was tried before and didn't't work. we shall see how it fares this time around. Tried during WW 2 to save energy and again in the early 70's for the same reason. Maybe third time is the charm.

I remember. In those days most of us walked and rode our bikes to/from school, even first graders. That almost does not exist today. This is a different world with more flexible hours at schools. I think it will work this time. But we'll see.

The problem is created by working parents. If you start school an hour later, many parents wouldn't be able to work at 8am. Changing school times would create a community wide chain reaction.

Kids all over the country go to school in the dark every winter.

All this hand wringing about kids being run over because it's dark outside is hilarious! teach your kids not to play in the street when they wait for the bus and look before crossing the street... it's not difficult.

Won't someone think of the children!

Dang now all the college kids won't get an extra hour to close down the bar when we switch over
When I used to tend bar in college we used to have a cheers for that extra hour. Was always one of the best non holiday nights of the year.

We've got three young kids, so I'm pretty familiar with working parents trying to deal with odd school hours. No matter what, the school day is always shorter than a normal adult's work schedule, so there will always need to be some kind of arrangements made to deal with it.

I agree completely... but that is a lot easier after school than it is before. My point is changing the school day in the winter isn't a good option. My kids go to the bus stop in the dark as it is now and they are just fine. No adjustment necessary.

BAN CLOCKS!!!! BAN TIME SCHEDULES!!! They are manmade assaults on freedom! Live on YOUR OWN SCHEDULE, just do it when you want! Don’t be a slave, be a REBEL, DECLARE YOUR FREEDOM!

DISCLAIMER; This is tongue in cheek, if you take it serious that’s on you.

Or just identify as a standard timer outside of hunting season then switch to DST'er when it matters.

You don’t think I have taught my kids to not play in the street, look before crossing, or not to run out from a parked car in a parking lot? You must not know anything about kids. It’s not necessarily about the kids running out in the street. It’s also more about drivers not seeing them. Where I live there are no sidewalks. Just two lane roads with a small dirt shoulder where the kids have to stand. I can worry about my kids all I want to.

I still hate DST for a lot of other reasons.

I have three of them and deal with the same situation you describe when they get on the bus.... which they do, in the dark, all winter long.

Are people driving on the shoulder and in the ditches in your area because "they can't see kids"? Or, and I know this is a crazy idea... do the cars stay on the road? If the cars are on the road, and your kids are not I have a hard time understanding the danger.

I have seen many vehicles pull off the road onto the shoulder to make a turn onto another road and dang near hit lines of kids standing there waiting for the bus. The driver honks at them and gets mad at them for “being in the way”. I’ve seen kids get hit standing on the side of the road when a car went onto the shoulder to get around another vehicle that they wanted to pass. Believe me, you don’t want to see kids get hit by a vehicle.

My kids don’t catch the bus in the dark during the winter months. It’s light outside at 6:30. In fact, they don’t catch the bus at all anymore. They ride with their mom to school since she is a teacher at the same school now. They go home with her as well or grandma picks them up and brings them home till we get off work.

I still worry about all those other kids out there by themselves. Yes, there are a ton of dumb, irresponsible drivers here.

Well, Ican't speak for where you live obviously but i can tell you that stuff never happens around here and it's dark when the kids are getting on the bus for a large chunk of the school year.

Well, it actually will start in Mar 2023......we just won't switch back to standard time as we would have in Nov 2023. But ya.......why not make the change effective to this year instead of next.
Alot of trucking companies have already planned all their routes and ETAs for this year and next year with the usual time changes already calculated into that so they've requested that it doesn't go into affect until 2023 so that it doesn't mess with their schedules.

How does the clock not changing change the time of schedules, not understanding this one, 8am is 8am.
