CWD: Interesting article from WY

To me this isn’t a question of if CWD exist, it’s how big of an issue is it? what management options exist besides reducing the herd?

This is showing a 10% prevalence rate in Wisconsin, I’m glad your state is doing well but I don’t think that applys to a different species with much more prevalence

Sorry man i hate to inform you but almost NO ONE has their deer tested in WI.

That link you gave shows only 17013 deer were tested but hunters killed 321844 deer this past season. So 5% were tested. I highly doubt you can even remotely ascertain prevalence numbers off such a small sample size.

What is probably a more significant stat is that 321844 deer were killed total in 2024. CWD was discovered in WI in 2001. In the 90s through to 2000 you know what hunters killed on average? You got it, right around 300,000 to 340,000 deer. So much for all the deer being wiped out from CWD. Zero decline in kill number after CWD being around 25 years AND record number of kills from 2001-2015 due to the DNR giving out unlimited tags to kill em all.

How many are killed by rifles? I wonder if the stats even out or if there's so many the crossbow increase doesn't matter. Regardless, if you're only at 10% like that above poster stated then it's neither here nor there. The guy I talked to was speaking of a region that was really bad, not statewide, he was saying something like 60%-80%.

Rifle Buck kills have been about the same for decades. Right around 100,000.




The only thing that’s changed is crossbow hunters that are clearly targeting bucks and having high success rates due to being able to INSANELY use them from mid Sept through Jan 31. Who can’t target and kill a buck with a crossbow in 5 months!

But, i’ve still never heard the DNR keeping tabs on age class.

Well, that’s not exactly true. If we hunt down and kill every single deer and elk on the continent to the point of extinction CWD will then be eliminated.

My buck tested positive for CWD this past season. That is my 4th CWD positive buck between Wyoming and Colorado.

I just don’t see a strong correlation to Wyoming mule deer.

You know what else has changes since 2001, probably got twice the hunters out there too. Either way it ain't about numbers it's about quality, if your age class is 3 years younger that makes a big difference.

You're clearly overly emotional and finding stats to backup your feelings, and anyone who tries to draw similarities between CWD and Covid has clear markers of reaching for straws trying to gain some sort of emotional support. Talk to us when Pfizer comes out with a CWD vaccine and mandates the states to adminster it. The two aren't even in the same realm, but you keep on the good fight and keep ignoring the stats. Hopefully with the money being spent on research we'll find out just how big of a deal, or not, it actually is, but the extreme emotional response on both sides over the "discussion" aren't worth a steamer.

Between 1999 and 2023 in WI, there was an 11% increase in deer licenses sold.
