That Cold Steel version is great to have in the kitchen.Picked up a cold steel just because. Here it is with my yardbird and 3” belt knife from @Slalomnorth.

I would, except that you're already planning to mess it up...Does anyone have a Grhoman #1 I could borrow so I can copy the design? I want to toss it into CAD and shrink it by ~15% and end up with a ~3.5" blade

Fantastic! Thanks! I'll send you a PM!I would, except that you're already planning to mess it up...
PM me your address and I'll send you mine...I won't have much to cut up for a while.
But...you have to at least consider a full-size version, maybe with a slightly larger handle. Maybe another with the slightly larger handle and a thinned down #2 ish type blade...for a head-to-head contest between the two in honor of @SDHNTR s observations.
I can actually send you my R Murphy version as well so you can compare another variation (R Murphy was the maker of the Herters version - they apparently are no longer making them).
I'm open to pretty much anything. I'm thinking of taking a page out of @Slalomnorth book and getting some 0.08" 14C28NWhat steel are you planning to use?
I’ve always wondered what 14c28n would be like if it was bumped up to 60-62 HRC. My experience with it was with a Civivi pocket knife. Easy to sharpen and tough, but did not hold an edge very long.I'm open to pretty much anything. I'm thinking of taking a page out of @Slalomnorth book and getting some 0.08" 14C28N
It seems like the standard is 61-62 these days. Looks like edge retention and toughness are still great at 62. I have 2 customs in the works right now, both harder use blades. Looks like Civivi uses 57-60 HRC depending on the model. I’d be interested to see how it performs at 62 HRC.It seems like the standard is 61-62 these days. That's way low!Looks like Civivi uses 57-60 HRC depending on the model. I’d be interested to see how it performs at 62 HRC.
Agreed. It was similar in edge retention to 12c27.That's way low!
Okay. I have made a few CBKs and been pretty happy with how they turned out. But they are all variations on the model #1. Now I am thinking I will try to make a pretty close copy of the #1, with very little modification. How thick are the handle scales on the original Grohmann, and do they taper much at either end of the handle?
ThanksHandle scales are the place for modification and improvement IMO. They are a bit too thick and don’t have amazing geometry. The handle profile is great though.
