Custom mini Canadian belt knife

I like the slimmer blade and the overall shape of it with the higher tip. That shape maximizes the slicey-ness. The think blade stock will also make this quite the cutter. I also like that you’ve kept some thickness in the handle in the area right behind the blade. Some of these CBKs get really small in that area and I like a little beef there.
Yeah I have found:
-tall handle height = slim scales
-narrow handle height = thicker scales
I imagine it’s too early to tell but do you think this will be your go to pattern going forward?
I think it will be yes

I picked up a new pocket sheath for my wee Canadian. Still have this knife in a regular use rotation and still loving it for everyday pocket knife and bird knife duty. I will confess that I haven’t used it on anything bigger though.

@CypressCreek tried to sell me on the leather pocket sheath back when I bought the knife from him, but I opted for kydex. The leather pocket sheaths ride lower in your pocket than an ulticlip on kydex. And the leather is just classy looking. This sheath came direct from Jou Fuu Leather who makes sheaths for Cypress Creek. He does nice work.

That sheath made it to you pretty quick! It seems like you ordered it just a couple days ago. Jou-fuu is the man! Glad to see the knife is still getting regular use.

I got a chance to use both the zipper and deer rock CBK knife on a whitetail doe last weekend. I gutted the doe, quartered it while hanging, then deboned the quarters with both knives. I’ve got a list of thoughts for each application below as I tried to use them equally for all the steps. The short review is both are awesome and an upgrade from the KOA Yukon or any drop point knife I’ve used in the past.

Gutting
Zipper: Felt a bit clunky “coring” the butthole. Zipped the belly easily. Great control for blind cuts on diaphragm and windpipe.

DR: Better “coring”. Zipped the belly easily. Great control for blind cuts on diaphragm and windpipe. Grip swell allowed me to comfortably slide back on handle for more reach.

Quartering
Zipper: Zipped along spine and legs easily. Was able to us 90 percent of the blade skinning for skinning cuts. Very comfortable in a hammer, pinch grip, or indexed along spine. Blade felt a bit clunky on backstraps around the hip bone.

DR: Zipped along spine and legs easily but a bit tougher than the zipper (I think due the taller more rounded spine). Was able to us 60ish percent of the blade skinning for skinning cuts. Very comfortable in a hammer grip. Pinch grip wasn’t the most comfortable and I felt myself switching to the index grip instead. Blade felt better on the backstraps and around the hip bone (I think due to shorter blade height).

Deboning/Steaking
Zipper: Would rather use 6” boning knife. Functional, but a bit clunky for detail and plunge type cuts.

DR: Would rather us a 6” boning knife. Functional, but made me nervous about breaking it cutting between joints and would like more length for trimming steaks.

Overall thoughts:
Both knives worked well. The zipper allows easier use of the full blade while the deer rock CBK allows for easier detail work. I prefer the handle on the deer rock knife for all but pinch grip use (I really like the contour towards the end of the handle). I want to use it a bit more but think I’d like a ramp on the edge where it meets the blade to help with pinch grip comfort. The zipper grip is comfortable, but I think could be a bit longer. The zipper feels more stout with the saber grind and taller blade, but I don’t see myself having any issues with the deer rock knife. I think for a “do it all” solution either would work very well but would pick the deer rock for its slightly longer blade, better handle shape, and better “nimbleness” for detail work.

Bonus comment on sheath:
Both are in orange kydex and secure the knives well. I'd like to see both add a drain hole for easier cleaning. In the field I try and clean them off as best I can but typically have some amount of fat stuck on them and need to clean it out later. The deer rock knife has a bit of a hole from the taco design, but would prefer a toothpick sized hole when forming. The pancake style from LS wild is sealed.
