Custom 300 WSM - who has them?

I should have explained my needs more which the PRC would fulfill a little nicer than the traditional 300 WSM. Using it for ELR shooting and double to hunt with. The long heavy bullets just work better for that or makes it "easier" because of the physics. I haven't reloaded them but looking into it it is a little more straight forward.

Nothing life changing but since I am going to get one or the other, 300 PRC fits the bill better for what I am looking for. I would imagine your going to be seeing more of them in the future. It seems like it is going to be the 6.5 Creedmoor of the .300 calibers. Just the laws of physics.

What is easier? Besides a prc having more case capacity, what physics are you referring to? A PRC in factory rifle form is definitely set up better for long bullets but that can all go out the window with a custom.

I plan on going with a factory build and the PRC is designed from the ground up to take the longer heavier bullets for things like head height and free bore spacing. But like i said it isn't life changing or something to run out and buy if you already have a 300 WSM. And if you want to pay for a custom rifle your narrowing that gap. But if buying off the shelf models and you like to play around at 1500-1700 yards and or want to shoot game at 600-700 yards, the PRC has a slight edge in accuracy. That's all.

A 300 PRC is no more or less accurate compared to a 300 WSM. That statement doesn't even make sense to me.

And, remember the OP was talking about a custom built rifle, not factory.

Sorry, I should have said slightly better "BC" than "accuracy" with the longer heavy bullets. My bad. I am in the dilemma of factory rifle in 300 WSM vs custom 300 WSM or factory 300 PRC. I intend to to really only be shooting loads like 225gr or heavier and seems like it will be cheaper to go with a PRC.

Picked up my 300wsm yesterday from the gunsmith. A 26” barrel with terminator brake makes for a long boom stick

I had a 300 WSM, not custom. I liked the way it shot and the overall package so Im building a 7mm WSM. I have load workup for a SAAMI spec chamber if you want it. Not sure if your custom build will have a longer mag box and throated barrel.

Personally, I have loved the WSM cartridges, I currently have a 20" barrel 300 wsm that smokes a 212ELD-x at 2800 FPS. Its a hot dose of H4350 but it performs well and its a stock gun minus cutting down the barrel add muzz brake. I've been very impressed. I do believe that considering it is a short action and a short barrel, It is a great performer. I believe that more cartridges will be released using the short/fat case design. The 6.5 PRC is one of them, the 7 SAUM has gained a lot of popularity as well as the 7WSM. Currently having HCA building a 338 WSM, I'm stoked. Anyways, not jumping on the debate of "Better" Cartridges but i've personally just been really impressed what this case can do in a multitude of platforms.

Just bought a 300 wsm ridgeline, what would you suggest as my first upgrade on that rifle? Did the stock upgrade save any weight? Already wanting to tinker!

@DPReef My stock upgrade saved a little bit of weight, approximately 8 ounces, not very noticeable. What was noticeable was my groups improvement going to the Mesa Precision Altitude stock. At 200 yards I went from "sub MOA 2" groups to bugholes < .5" groups. It has a lot to do with my frame, shooting style and bedding you get with a gunsmith rather than the factory. Definitely recommend.

Thanks for that feedback. How long did that bedding job take from Mesa. Everyone is so backed up right now! Do you know if there is a factory load or handload sold online for the 190 berger? Never got into reloading...

300 WSM is a great all around caliber and is my go to for my mountain rifle. I had Todd Bettin build mine a few years back (where does time go). I had him build it up around the Barnes 168 grain TTSX bullet.

• X-treme titanium action
• Satern barrel - Bettin carbon wrapped with 22" finished length with 1:11.25
• Bettin Ti brake
• Bettin carbon stock
• Bettin detachable bottom metal with internal magazine.
• Jewel trigger

I'm around 3100 fps with 64.5 grains of RL17. It shoots about 0.3 MOA when I have my $hit together when shooting.

There are probably some more sexier options out there now, but if its not broken....

As of right now this is a 20” barrel 300 wsm savage in an XLR chassis. Love the folding buttstock! This rifle is getting a HCA 24” carbon barrel chambered for a 338 WSM. I’m beyond stoked to see what it can do when it completes the HCA treatment!
