CPW June Meeting - BGSS Proposed Changes

During the June 12-13 Commission Meeting, there will discussions about the new BGSS [Big Game Season Structure]

"FINAL POLICY CHANGES
At the June 2024 Commission meeting, the Commission will consider and is expected to adopt the policy framework for the 2025-2029 Big Game Season Structure. Then at the November 2024 Commission meeting, the Commission will consider formal regulations implementing the BGSS framework for the 2025 hunting season."

I read they might go away from OTC elk and make them draw but have high quotas to basically make them all easy to draw. They also state will; not address crowding until clear objectives were met?
Archery elk will be valid only for specific units, not state wide?

Changes to cow moose also.

Yes. They're proposing to add an early archery season for mule deer that would run Aug 15-Sep 1. This would be a separate season in addition to the existing Sep 2-30 archery deer season.

Not sure I understand that. Archery deer hunters have been clamoring for their early season back. I’m seeing that August season as a BIG win for bowhunters.

Looks like the 2-3-4 rifle deer seasons will be a couple weeks earlier more like they were before this last 5 year period. Really happy I was able to use my points for 4th season deer this year.

Yep, NR's archery taking it in the chin either way.....oh well.....I hate it, but it will be a reality. Looks like they can spare a few thousand tag $$ donations from NR's.

Praying that CPW commission takes the recommendations on status quo for resident archery OTC. This recommendation sure does beat the previous recommendation (eliminate ALL OTC archery). We'll see if the commission is willing to do so.

The CPW has reversed their decision and Residents will have OTC archery elk and NonRes will be limited.

Thats a win for R, but still don't understand limiting NR archery while keeping OTC rifle.

I voiced my opinion already, but archery is spread out that time of year while the huntable area for rifle can be cut in half due to weather. Way more crowding in rifle seasons.

I agree it could be a big win having the Aug 15 start date… but it will be very few units that will have this, creating overnight 5+ point tags that likely very few will get to hunt… I do think pushing the rifle dates back to where they were is smart. Let 4th be the “rut” hunt and hopefully let more bucks turn into those Co giants you used to be able to find in just about any unit…

Completely agree, love keeping otc for R and should do the same for rifle for R, but should institute a OTC cap for NR, knowing Co it will be insanely high and likely have no effect haha they are money grubbers to the very end, they will squeeze the herds up until the wolves really start squeezing them

Came to see if anyone was discussing this reversal. This is huge for the Colorado resident archery hunters.

I firmly believe this reversal came from pressure applied through the Colorado Resident Hunters Association page on FB. That page has been instrumental in getting resident sportsmen involved and vocal with the commission, CPW leadership, and the state legislature. Specifically, Brandon Siegfried put so much time and effort into keeping CPW honest that it could be a full-time job.

On regular occasions, CPW would present misleading data to the Commission as to advance positions that would result in either a status quo, or total limitation, both of which helped protect CPW's revenue stream. Brandon would address those misrepresentations, while addressing the Commission and ensure the correct data would be pushed out to both the commission and then shared that updated information through the page.

That revenue stream was the primary concern of CPW proposals at every turn. Brandon would present data while highlighting public trust doctrine, conflicts of interest on the commission, and how that revenue stream wasn't CPW's primary mandate. He was key in helping organize messaging so public comments contained a consistent theme touching each of the aforementioned topics.

CPW's original recommendation was the least popular as identified by the surveys, workgroups, and public outreach over the last 3 years. It was even highlighted in every presentation to the commission that the CPW PREFERRED RECOMMENDATION had the least amount of support at every turn.

While this reversal of position and new preferred alternative aren't set in stone, this is a step in the right direction. The commission is still in the process of codifying these proposals which will require a vote in the coming weeks. If you are a resident sportsmen in Colorado, I highly recommend you reaching out to the commission and voice your position as that could be what is required to get this across the finish line.

I agree, but lets not forget the CBA (Colorado Bowhunters Association) has been all over this as well.
