My thought is well if I draw a NM,WY, or MT elk tag and he's at 50 and there's a wind at my back (I know he would run from scent) I would 100% send it.

My arrow was under the taget. Dead center alignment but hit the dirt about 6" in front of the target. Initial reaction was I must've looked at the wrong pin. After some reading and a quick question to Snyder on a live feed I think the tail wind got me.

DAY 3 confidence restored

Everything felt great. I seriously was down on myself after yesterday. Day 4&5 will tell me if this will build confidence and know wind reaction better or shorten MER.
We're expecting rain and thunderstorms next couple days. Planning on shooting consecutive days.

The equipment- Hoyt Rx3 Ultra #2 Cam. Spot Hogg Hoggfather Double Pin. 28 draw. 62lbs. 446g at 253fps. Valkyrie System with 160g fixed broadheads and 22g outsert 300 grain. AAE stealth 4 fletch. Hamskea Micro tune. Quivilizer. Nock2it.

MER- 50 yards, which for me right now is excellent considering my bow arm is still weak from last years stroke.

Day 5. Cold. 31 degrees. Stiff cold wind 10-20mph from the northwest. Shot felt great. Think the wind grabbed it a bit. Overall happy with the way I shot during the challenge all things considered. (windy, arm).


Day 4. Cloudy. 41 degrees feels like 30. Windy. Really windy. Out of the west 15/25mph gusts up to 40mph+. Watched Dudley's video series about proper shot sequence last night while working on repairing arrows. It worked, shot felt crisp today.


Day 3. Cloudy 52 degrees. Winds 5-10mph
Left arm is sore today (nerve damage) Had a difficult time holding on target. Results were “ok”



Day 2. Sunny 53degrees. Gusty wind from directly behind me at 10/20mph. Held dead on my mark but shot was 4 inches low. Wind ?

Day 1.The conditions- 41 Degrees and windy as hell. 10/15mph with huge gusts. The shot, thought I punched it a tad but it went in there.

Day 1 Cold Bow Callenge
Excited to get in on this and shoot at my MER.

70 yards. No wind to speak of. 52 degrees. Felt a bit high and hit top of 8” plate.

Prime Centergy 68 lb draw shooting 290 FPS. 29” draw. Easton Bowfire 400 Arrows. G5 deadmeat broadhead 100gr. QAD rest, Black Gold 5 pin sight w/slider, bee stinger 8” stabilizer.
Day 2: Pictured above. Home from camping. 54 degrees, slight left to right crosswind, 3-5 mph. Arrow flew great despite one blade opening due to Damaging it spring as I pulled it from the target yesterday.

Day 3: 46 degrees with what felt like another 5 mph left to right crosswind. Shot was low and right, just missed the right side of the plate.

Day 4: Cold and Breezy! The wind was gusting so drew and waited 10 seconds or so until it calmed for a second and squeezed the trigger on my release. With the conditions I felt good about hitting the plate!
Day 5: 5-10 mph gusts. Felt good about the shot til the string slapped my baggy sleeve on my long sleeved shirt, and fell quite low!
Not how I wanted my last shot to go!

Since I had shot my 5 arrows and completed the Cold Bow Challenge I went back to 70 yards and shot 3 more arrows hitting the plate 3 out of 3 shots. 2 of 3 being tight!

55 yards MER. Shooting a Realm X at 70# and 29" draw. X Impact 250 spine arrows with 125 grain points. MBG single pin sight, Stokerized stabilizer, Tightspot quiver and using a Stan Perfex Resistance release. I've figured out that the arrows are just a touch too stiff and have bought new one's (300 spine) but only have the 250's for now. The "spot" on the target is a 4x6 inch mark I made with mud on my shoe. I was aiming center and the shot felt great. Also, the resistance release has been a game changer. I finally admitted to myself that I had TP and started using this release and it has helped immensely.

Day 1: Conditions were about 47 degrees and dead calm.


Day 2: Snowing like crazy, but very calm. It seems I need to adjust the sight housing left.


Day 3: Wind was steady at 15-20, gusting over 25 and was coming from 4oclock to 10oclock. Fairly brisk at 15 degrees air temp. I waited for the wind to even out and the shot felt great. Also, I did adjust my sight housing to the left just a hair which appears to be just about right.


Day 4: Breezy again, winds around 15-20 and cool at 23 degrees. Shot felt great again and I still feel like that's a dead animal. I'll finish it up tomorrow and thanks to Robby for putting this on.


Day 5: 36 degrees and random gusty wind and it shows.

Bowtech Reign 6 bow, 58#, 460 grain axis 340, 5mm with 50 grain brass, 265 fps with 100 grain magnus buzzcut. MER - 50 yards. The insert I'm considering the vitals with the white cross measures 8.5" x 8.5"

Day 1 - 4/11 - 35 degrees, calm wind



Day #2 - 30-40 mph NNE wind, winter storm warning. 50 yards with a magnus buzzcut. Hit is about ten inches left and 6-7 inches low. Not a great shot but conditions were not very good!


Day 3 - 4-13. 34 degrees, 15 mph West wind, full sun. Shot low and left again. Not real pleased with the shot! 50 yards, magnus buzzcut. I'm aiming for the center of the white painted cross. The square insert with the painted cross measures 8.5" x 8.5"


Day 4 - 4/14 - better shot today. Wind was about 12 mph out of the west, around 27 degrees. 50 yards, magnus buzzcut

Day 5 - 5/15, around 28 degrees. 10 mph NW wind. Another poor shot - about 12 inches right and low. Might need to reevaluate my MER 50 yards with the magnus buzzcut...

4/10/20 cold bow day 1

Killzone: Ideally i'll be putting them in the green circle ( i believe its about 6") but acceptable killzone for me is the square face on the 18-1 rinehart (it's about 8"x8").
Main target being Mule Deer.

Compound:

MER: 65yd
Bow:Mathews Halon 6
Arrow: Easton FMJ 5mm 300spine with 50gr brass insert, tipped with a SEVR 2.1 100gr!
Fletching: 6 Fletch aae promax 2° offset
Weather: light rain with no wind



Traditional:

MER: 25 yds
Bow: OMP smoky mtn Hunter 45lb
Arrow: Beeman centershot 500spine, tipped with 100 gr WASP 3blade!
Fletching: 3- 4 inch feathers slight offset

Conditions were same as above .. pulled slightly low but I'll take it! ( I'm green as grass when it comes to traditional Archery)

4/11/20 cold bow day 2

Conditions: 68 degrees with light breeze.

Compound:

Shot was right on the edge of my proclaimed "killzone". Felt like I rushed the shot and the arrow shows it. If buck was broadside I would probably be OK but if quartering it might be a sleepless night. So I'll consider this a NO BUENO!



Traditional:

Again...felt like i rushed it. Early release= High hit. Another NO BUENO!

I went over some details on day 1 but figured I'd throw up a pic with some more.

Sight: Fast Eddie XL single pin (with integrated double pin)
Rest: QAD Ultrarest

4/12/20. Cold bow day 3 - happy easter y'all

Conditions: 50 degrees , no wind, very cloudy.

Compound:
Man.. 65 yards looked like 80 today IDK if it was the overcast skies or what!? After my shot yesterday I was sure to settle in and commit to the shot. I'll take it!


Traditional:

Shot felt good. I'm realizing my MER should probably be 17-20yrds but I'm going to stick it out at 25 to see what's realistic at this point. Shot was right on the edge of my proclaimed killzone but I'll take it with traditional gear!



4/13/20 cold bow day 4

Conditions- 45 degrees, overcast with light breeze.

Compound:
Shooting with some brush obstruction today. Shot felt good, happy with result.


Traditional:
Good elevation, pulled it left


4/14/20 cold bow day 5 FINAL DAY!

Conditions- 50degrees and sunny , light variable wind.

Compound : Felt shaky this morning, had to hold for a bit longer. Stayed calm and let it fly happy with the shot.


Traditional: Shot felt decent , thought I missed the whole target but barely got the bottom. 3 for 5 with trad.


Thats a wrap! Felt good with compound performance, and decent with trad (going to lower my MER to 20). I like this concept.. concentrating on your first shot , because its really all that counts!

I tried to add some pics of my bow/arrow setup but apparently you can only add 10 attachments ( which is filled with the 5 compound and 5 trad).

I am picking 50 yards as my MER. After missing the same deer twice last year under 60 I have been humbled.

Hoyt RX-1 Ultra

Day 1 - no wind 60 degrees shot felt good. I’ll take it !


day 2 -wind was blowing from behind me about 5 to 7 mph. Shot broke felt pretty good but the pin was dancing a little.
Day 3 - happy Easter! Had left
To right gusts from 10 to 12 mph. The pin settled nice and shot felt really Good.


Day 4 - 70 degrees with very little wind. Shot felt good but Felt the pin settle just to the left once the shot broke and that’s where it ended up. One more day!

Day 5 - I was busy with work and decided to skip a day between my last shot. Figured while hunting ill go more than a day without shooting the bow so might be something to consider.
No wind perfect conditions. The pin never really settled and I totally jumped/ punched the trigger. Not how I wanted to end the challenge! But, this just goes to show how any little anxiety or hesitation while the shots breaking can literally make or brake the entire process. Last year I took a great buck with my bow, but also missed a buck twice a few weeks later and it still haunts me!! Thanks Rokslide for the CBC it really does make you a better Bowhunter.

Windy in S.D. today. Where I was shooting there was a little right to left, but mostly in my face down range.
Compound bow - LH 08’ Mathews switchback XT. Shooting black eagle 350 with50 gr half out and 100 grain slick trick standard. Heat vanes. BG sight and whisker biscuit rest, Scott release. I shot good left to right but didn’t compensate for wind in face much and probably dropped it a little low myself. First picture is With the compound shot at 50 yards.

trad set up - galaxy sear ILF with trad tech long Carbon limbs. Shooting off the shelf with glove (have a tab but haven’t tried it much yet).the shot at 30 yards felt okay, I think I collapsed a little hence the impact right. day six arrow 350 spine, 100 gr stainless components. Same slick trick standard 100 gr head. Trad vanes 4 fletch 90degree. These heavy arrows fly great in the wind! It is Noticeable.

Day 2: less win, but still some gusts around 15. Shot after a workout so I was tired and arms were a little worn out. Wind was swirling at the range, for the trad shot it was at my back. Compound shot it was left to right mostly. Made a pretty nice shot with the recurve, just must have let it go a little high. Maybe I pulled in excitement to watch the arrow instead of just executing the shot all the way through. I hit just outside of an 8” diameter vital kill. The target I’m aiming at is 2.5” in diameter.

Didn’t make a good shot with compound. Wind switched and started gusting a little more left to right. Should have held longer or let down and tried when it called down...I didn’t, punched the trigger slightly and pulled it right.

Shot 3: Wind 13 constant with some gusts right to left. Waited for gust to subside, I could tell it was still blowing down range som, held right on. Great shot but obviously wind pushed it left. Still in kill zone though.
Shot 3 trad: been struggling to clear my mind and just focus on back tension and the spot... almost impossible not to want to aim with the added stress from this challenge. However, went through the process well and executed a good shot. May have dropped the bow arm a bit to see where I hit a little early, hence the low shot. Just outa my kill zone again.

day 4, minimal wind, sweatshirt weather. shot next to a fence post and had some grass on either side of the line of flight to target. Dropped the pin down onto target and for some reason punched it doing so. This challenge inducing target panic. Still within bottom edge of kill zone.
Trad shot, went through the process a couple times in my head before the shot. Release felt great hence good left to right. Same result as yesterday.

day 5: no wind. Fairly steep down hill shot with all hunting gear on, hat and face mask etc. shooting through grass. Both arrows actually hit a piece of grass about half way to target too. (Definitely a shot I would be shooting at turkeys with spot and stalk etc). Compound shit’s felt real good. Was happy with the trad shot, not as much the compound. Both just out of an 8” circle unfortunately.

Day 1 finally!
Hoyt RX4 ultra MER @ 55 yards
QAD Integrate, BG Verdict 3 pin S and S custom
Easton Axis 300 with a brass insert and Magnus Black Hornet 125. Had a little wind blowing tonight and got me forward.

Day 2 - Really nice out- 50 degrees but South winds off Lake Erie still. Just a few inches left still of where I wanted to be. I'll bet that 525g arrow still broke this whitetails shoulder down!
Day 3 - Better shot today, light winds and a little drizzle.

Day 4 - I was excited to try a shot today, after a stressful shift, with 30 mph winds. I shot in between gusts and overcompensated - just about got guts!
Day 5 - a nice breeze 5-10 - 32 degrees but a beautiful final day!!

Excited to do this again this year. I’ll be shooting a new to me Hoyt carbon defiant that I scored here on Rokslide last year and just started really shooting it a few weeks ago. It is set up at 70lbs and a 28.5” draw, has a 5 pin ascent verdict and a crossover 1017 stabilizer.

Arrow is a 340 gold tip kinetic kaos with 75 grain brass insert, 10 grain iron will collar and a 100 grain vented iron will broadhead.

For me I’m using an old beat up bear target at 50 yards for my MER and aiming for the vitals. I am also going to draw and hold for 45 seconds before I settle my pin and shoot.

Day 1 4/10/20
60 degrees out and no wind, shot felt good and hit its mark.

Day 2 4/11/20
55 and sunny with no wind again, nice and calm for the shot and hit its mark.

Day 3 4/12/20
32 degrees with no wing. I wanted to get a morning shot in during the challenge so took the dog for a couple mile walk before the shot. After my alarm went off for the 45 seconds the dog was sitting in my shooting lane and would not come when called so I let down and started the 45 seconds over and I get rushed when the alarm went off and I pulled the shot about 8” from the past 2 arrows. Needless to say I’m not happy at all with this arrow.

Day 4 4/13/20
60 degrees with a slight breeze, just got done working out to get the heart rate up a bit so simulate elk hunting. Shot get good but was a bit forward and stuck in the shoulder.

Day 5 4/14/20
Another 60 degree day with no wind, shot felt good and hit its mark and I feel redeemed from my day 3 neck shot.

40 yards is my MER. My setup is the same as the last two years. I’m using a Hoyt Nitrum now set at 65 lbs and using Blackovis Custom Easton Axis Arrows. Running 100 grain slick trick broad heads! Big thanks to Rokslide and all the sponsors for putting this on again!

Day 1: Windy as balls in ND. Not bad for first arrow shot in 6 months!

Day 2: Cold and breezy, think I need a new target for broad heads lol almost murdered my shed!

Day 3: Cold and light snow. I sat outside for a bit in light clothes to simulate a cold sit in my tree stand. It was noticeable harder to pull my bow back and was shaking a bit but I settled in and had a good release. I was really happy with this shot!

Day 4: Cold again and partly cloudy. Took this shot with my pack on in a crouched position. Can tell I dropped a bit after my release as I was low and left.

Day 5: Cold and breezy. I took this shot in a sitting position simulating a tree stand shot. I drilled the center and am thinking it’s time to buy a new target LOL.

71 degrees and clear. Pretty strong breeze left to right around 10-15 mph. Held left about 5”. Should have held more. Fixed blade broadheads don’t do good in the wind. Missed the vitals for the 1st time perfect height but drifted too far right. Fun challenge for sure!

D2 = 4/11 It was a beautiful sunrise here at 8,000 ft in central Colorado. A bit chilly at 22 degrees with 0 wind and just enough alpen glow to light up the target.




D3 = 4/12 cold with a 15 mph wind right in my face at 7:45pm on Easter produced this result.



D4 = 4/13, Cold here today at sunrise or 14 deg and the skiff of snow revealed where the rabbits and deer fed early today. Pry will shoot at the deer tomorrow for last day as the sevr heads are tearing up the new target a bit.

Slight wind right to left poss 3mph..




D5 = 4/14, Last day and I waited until sunset tonight for the wind to die down. 31 deg been a cold 5 days.

Day one,
Cabelas recurve 45 lbs,125 gr stingers on 500 gold tip hunters, MER 10 yards. I sat water puddles last August for coues whitetail with this bow, first time hunting big game with a trad bow, this will be backup for rut bull elk this year.

Elite 60 lbs compound, 400 gold tip hunter xts with 100 grain magnum slick tricks, MER of 60 yards. Taking this bow for my elk hunt this September, shot a 4point Mule deer at 40 this January.

Considering the new round insert to my target to be the kill zone size.

Slight wind, at my back, sun to my left.

Both were within a lung hit, but still disappointed. Have taken a month off and it shows...

….I just now noticed the first contestant, welcome Randy! Very much looking forward to having you contribute here.

Day 2:
Calm conditions right a dusk. Shot first with the compound, at the shot I started dropping the bow, one of my worst and most persistent bad habits in archery. Arrow landed outside the kill zone.

The recurve shot felt great and hit great.


Day 3: swirling light winds, late afternoon, sun in my face. Didn't have a hat on, since it gets in the way of my recurve, wishing I had it for the compound shot.

Compound, focused on not dropping my arm at the shot, but let autopilot take over for the rest. Hit great. Wondering if I'm trending a hair low, might revisit my sight tape prior to the elk hunt.

Recurve, shot felt great, hit just on the edge of vitals. Definitely need to practice much more with this bow once the challenge is over.

Day 4: 10-15 mph winds gusty, mostly in my face, a bit right to left.

Compound shot, felt good, I didn't drop my arm, walked up and was disappointed in the hit. Will definitely be paying attention to my drops after the challenge is over, everything has been trending low.

Recurve shot, felt good, hit good. Excited to shoot a lot this summer. Last summer I spent getting used to the bow, and shooting a recurve by crawling down the string for closer shots.

Day 5:

Compound shot, Left to right wind <10 mph. Focused on keeping the pin over the top of the gray dot, let autopilot do the rest. Still hit low. Probably going to try some heavy blades this year anyways, looking forward to getting my dope dialed in better.

Recurve shot, felt good, hit good. Need to get this kind of accuracy and confidence out to 20 yards this summer.

Day 1: slight tail wind, 55ish degrees. Shot didn't feel great, but it's in the vitals


Day 2: No wind, 50 degrees I got a little excited and rushed the shot a bit.


Day 3, slight wind left to right, 45 degrees. Shot felt good.


Day 4: 40ish degrees, drizzling. This challenge is teaching me I clearly have a ways to go before fall.


Day 5: 40 degrees, a bit of a breeze right to left, ~5mph. I was hoping to end on a high note, and the arrow was a bit high, so maybe I should have hoped to end on a middle note.


Summary: I have a lot of work to do. This has been really eye opening. Once I get warmed up, and get a few fliers out of the way I can usually shoot pretty good groups at 50-70, but this one arrow thing is a bit of a different game. It does simulate hunting pretty well. Between now and August I want to increase my MER, and really dial in my game. I am the limitation in my setup. I am going to start practicing more consistently and repeat the 5 day challenge a bit closer to hunting season and hopefully see some big improvement.

Pretty awesome to be doing this with Ulmer! One of my hero’s for real.
Calling my MRE at 70. Wind was rough today, should have compensated more.

Day 2
Well I spent all day working on a deck, so lots of lumber and post hole digging by hand. Got my one shot in right before a storm rolled in so the wind was picking up but not bad. With the wind starting to pick up I dropped the quiver off, which I will do pretty often hunting. Pretty happy with the shot. Last year my first four days were good and I choked on the fifth

Day 3. Calm and cool out today. Shot felt good but wasn’t . Still in the center hex but barely.

Day 4. Toughest day of the challenge by far for me. Drew back anchored solid, settled my pin, and started pulling through. The shot broke perfect and while I was pulling, my pin was extra solid. The whole sequence just felt amazing. That’s why it was so hard, after executing a good shot and feeling like I had no pin float I just wanted to keep shooting

Day 5. Beautiful cool morning out. Got some good turkey scouting in for next week when season opens. Got a pic mid gobble and you can see the bearded hen on the left. Even better was I didn’t choke on the last day this year! Haha I guess I got the choke out of the way on day one and three

Day 1 45 degrees
No wind
Felt like I held forever,, little low... (3” low)
Sadly I haven’t shot in a month so i’ll Take it!

Day 2 60 degrees
Blowing 20+ mph left to right
Another LONG hold and another low miss.,, still probably a clean kill but barely (4” low) THIS is the kind of shot you are glad ur shooting a big mechanical!

Day 3 50 degrees
Nice sunny calm morning maybe 45*
Looking into a nasty glare... As I draw and get steady some neighbors walking a barking dog popped up 20 yards behind me (side street backs up to my yard) Pulled about 4” left...(hope the buck was facing right or it could be a shoulder hit! you can see how bad the glare was from the photo...

Day 4
45 degrees and a little more breeze than I’d like this morning (especially since im about to go fishing) swirling 10mph and a tiny drizzle.. shot felt pretty good... 4” low... starting to wonder if these heads are flying a hair lower than my field points at 60. I know they do fly low at 75-100,, but originally deemed them perfect to 60,, Good thing this isn’t an accuracy competition !

Day 5
Chilly 40 degrees out and no wind. Shot felt really good, but again it’s low. My group for all 5 arrows woulda looked decent, but Im wondering if these heads are flying lower than my field points since 4 out of 5 hit low..

This challenge was fun,, and can make you realize mistakes you’re making. I used to be religious about shooting my broadheads...Switched from 125 to 100 grain heads this season and am now wondering if I did enough shooting with the heads to verify that they fly the same as my field points out to 60...Missed a few bucks this year and it’s a little sad that I can’t say I’m 100% confident my broadheads we’re flying the same as my practice heads...I’m now super motivated to get out and get dialed!

I am going with an MER of 50. Haven't been able to shoot much this winter.
Shooting a Hoyt powermax 72#, 27" draw, QAD ultrarest, 5 pin fuse cybex slider sight, 10" bee stinger hunter stabilizer, 2 piece Hoyt carbon quiver 6 arrow. Scott wrist rocket
Arrow setup is gold tip kinetic Pierce arrow, 100 grain stainless day six insert collar system, 100 grain Ironwill S100 broadhead, 3 Fletch right helical AAE max stealth, gold tip knock, coming in at 480 grains shooting 255 fps.

Also shooting a recurve on this too with an MER of 20 yards. Don't shoot traditional much but thought that it'd be fun to give it a try on here. Bow is a 60" 50# Deer Slayer by Indian Archery. Arrow is a carbon Beman bowhunter, 200 grain field point, 4 Fletch left helical 5 inch synthetic feather, coming in at 630 grains.

I am shooting a half of a 3d elk target in my backyard and it's relatively flat.

Day 1 was clear skies and about 10 mph crosswind. Not ideal shots with either bow. I am definitely going to need to practice more once this is over with.

Day 2. Clear skies 45 degrees and breezy. Pretty ideal shooting conditions. Could have executed better.

Day 3 put the cold in cold bow challenge. 25 degrees, foggy, breezy, and misting. Compound shot felt solid, but still hit low. I thought that maybe I was dropping my bow arm during the shot on the first 2 days. I'm now wondering if I bumped my sight housing off over the winter. I'll see what the next couple of days show.
Recurve shot was iffy, but that is pretty typical. I can 100% say that form and practice are lacking with the recurve
Conditions sure made for a cold turkey hunt this morning.

Day 4 15 degrees, snowing, not much for wind. Pushed the shot to the right, felt like I punched the trigger a little bit. Shot was just as low as the last 3 days, gonna need to adjust my housing after this. Trad shot was far to low.

Day 5 43 degrees, 10mph cross wind. I have been hitting low on all of the previous 4 shots, so I held high and made my best shot of the challenge. Trad shot was a bit low again. I've been trying a point on method and haven't got it dialed in yet.


Thanks rokslide for putting this on and giving us the opportunity to win some great prizes. Had a great time doing the challenge and now I can get my sight housing dialed back in.

80 yds , trying to put it in the black blown out hole I’d say it about a kill zone of an elk ,pretty stiff head wind,

Day 2 - flipped my block because my broadhead shredded the material, I need a new target . About a 5 mph left to right crosswind , beautiful day 65 degrees , felt the shot drop off the table but litteraly 1 1/2 in low , wind was money . @ 80 yds I’ll take it!

Day 3-little left to right breeze , bout 75 degrees at 80yds mer, it wasn’t the wind that pulled me right , it was totally me , amazing wat a couple days off will do , elevation was money wind was right , need to remember “ execute execute execute”

Day 4 - about 70 degrees , stiff right to left wind id say 10mph, same 80yds mer,shot felt good wen it broke , held on the right side of the vitals , still ended up a couple inches left , happy with the elevations just right to left I’m a little inconsistent, fun stuff !! One More day
Day 5 - Final day and I had an audience !!! 4 different people which really stack the pressure, beautiful day about 73 degrees, slight tail wind this time , pretty good shooting conditions, took my time , settled in and pulled through the shot , felt perfect and it was , thanks guys for putting this on , it was very humbling and great practice putting yourself in a pressure situation , definitely will be doing more of these throughout the offseason!!!
