A general question for most folks here....Are you going to push your MER just passed what you have successfully killed animals at?

I have killed a bull at 748 and a buck at 710 (buck was the 2nd shot, I shot a touch over him the first shot) . I shot a lot more rounds back then. I don't know if I could make those shots now.

Well, you have to go 2/2 at 600+/- first, then you can (should) push your limit at 750-800 presumably.

I suspect most will take the 600 yard shots since they aren't penalized for a miss if they have shot past 400 before. For those that haven't, they will probably be in the 400-500 range.

I understand the rules with 2/2 at 600 first.

I just don't know if my confidence is much further than that anymore. I'll try the 2 at 600 and push it further and see what happens. I was just curious if other guys were going to push passed their longest kill as well.

I feel like MER for me is highly dependent on the conditions. One day it could be 450 in heavy winds cross canyon…but perfectly calm maybe 700 or so depending on my rest.

I’ll probably go with 650 or a little farther and just not shoot if conditions are extreme. Planning to find a random place to shoot in the mountains that I’ve never shot before to make it more realistic

If you can, Just go out and practice before it opens and see what you can do. That’s what I did today and found out that I should probably be sticking to what I’ve already killed deer at.

I think im going to shoot my 25-06. Checked zero then banged some steel at 500 off the tank trap. A sporter weight rifle from something other than prone seems more of a realistic hunting test, and in the spirt of the challenge.

How about a slight change to the 400 yard rule?
400 or longer if with a SCOPED rifle
Less if shooting iron sites?
What about hand guns?
I'd assume guys from states where straight wall cases are required are going to struggle with 400 yards.

I won’t speak for @Justin Crossley but this is a long range forum and a long range challenge, so I think the challenge is geared toward those shooters. Pistol hunters, ML hunters, open sight hunters, straight wall hunters, archery hunters, etc are getting left out. I don’t think you can include everyone.

This challenge is geared toward western hunting with a rifle. Maybe we will have some other type of challenge geared toward other types of hunting at some point, but for now, we are sticking with a 400-yard minimum.

I'm confused as to why folks who are NOT shooting distance keep popping up in the LONG RANGE HUNTING subforum.....

Long Range doesn't always have a specific definition. Long range for a 30-30 is different than 300 win mag or 338 Lapua imp or even a single shot pistol or ML with open sites. Probably going to be different for a 12 year old kid new to shooting than others who can hit a beer can at 1200.

I'm cool with how it is. I only offered a question since that is what this thread is about. Q& A no?

My boy @QMR doing a little practice on rocks just doing holdover. He had hits on 8-10 inch (guestimate) rocks at 335 and one a bit over 450 using holdover, neither first round hits. I hope to get a different scope on his gun this week and shoot through a chronograph so we can get him dialing.

Got a chance to shoot this afternoon at some distances I usually don't get to.
Most of the time my opportunities to practice shooting are 200yds and in at best and more often than not around 100yds.
Stretched it out to 500yds. In hopes of maybe being able to participate in the challenge with some practice and hopes of becoming a better distance shooter.
The wind calls are very humbling and challenging once past 300yds, even with the light variable winds.

The 16" gong target with a 9" square overlayed at the top center portion of the gong at 500yds was tucked about 20yds past the cruve of a tree line, it acted as a bit of a wind break, making the call a tad challenging. I did score several hits once I got my elevation and windage holds on. Inevitably the wind would change and shift my poi of target. I was able to get on the 9" plate a few times.

Had a 9" square/diamond plate at 200 and 300 yards I was able to score some hits on consistently without much difficulty. (I'm pretty comfortable shooting these distances)

Conditions:
Temp- around 70-75*
Winds- variable, 2-10mph from the 7-9 o'clock

Equipment:
"Rokslide Special" Tikka lite stainless .223
SWFA 6x moa
Warne mountain tech lows on a tikka 20moa rail
Ammo- Freedom Munitions 69gr bthp

The one take away from this is that I have a long way to go before I'm able to make cold bore shots on game animals comfortably out to 300 and beyond in any adverse conditions.
Needless to say I won't be participating this year but hopefully next year after a summer and fall of practice.

Good luck to everyone this year!!!
Those are some awesome prize you guys have lined up!
Thank you guys doing this challenge and motivating me to become a better distance shooter.

Good job man getting out there and learning. That’s truly the spirit of the challenge— honest assesment of our capabilities.
