I'm a slurp & run coffee drinker on a hunt. I don't like to mess around with steeping bags or waiting on things. VIA is the 95% answer for me. It tastes good (not perfect) and that's good enough. The convenience factor is huge for me. If anyone ever comes out with something as easy which tastes better I will go for it. When I can bring enough coffee for 12 days in a sandwich bag weighing a few ounces, that's hard to beat.

Amen. I buy green coffee and roast my own for home use (yes, I guess I'm a coffee snob.) but Via is the way to go for space and weight limitations while still providing some decent taste.

Another vote for the Folgers in Tea Bags. I am just not a fan of starbucks in general. I have been having Folgers coffee in tea bags since college and they do the job and are affordable.

I like those Folgers Singles too....very mild coffee. They don't take long either. My only real beef with them was when out on an extended hunt (say 10+ days) I would accumulate those wet coffee bags and have to dispose of them. That's a very minor thing, but it was enough that I preferred the no-hassle of VIA. I should add that a full tube (packet) of VIA makes a quite robust cup of coffee assuming a 12 ounce cup. A little strong for my tastes. I usually get 3 x 10 oz cups of coffee from 2 VIA tubes, and I like the slightly lighter taste.

An MSR drip filter or something similar works well if you want real coffee. I keep trying the via-type things but they never quite do the trick, other than keep a caffeine-withdrawal headache at bay. You just don't want to fill it up all the way (2/3 max) or it takes forever to strain. It adds an extra minute or two depending on how long you let it steep, and maybe weighs an ounce more, but I'm never sorry I packed it.

I bring via because they're easy but they taste pretty rough. I'm on the verge of just making cowboy coffee to be honest.

I followed the suggestion of a friend and started using a press/go-cup this year. I picked up a stainless steel one for $15 that might be a couple of ounces heavier, but keeps coffee hot for hours. I played around with it and figured out the optimal measure of coffee and loaded some snack bags with coffee.

Using it without the top and built-in press, it keeps oatmeal, mashed potatoes, soup etc warm very nicely. I make sure to rinse and clean it immediately to avoid having dry oatmeal or potato paste stuck in it. It is a little deep/tall.

I'm not going back to instant.

Hey, do you have a link to the press/cup? I too am looking into better options. Used the via for a while but hated them, the folgers instant is better IMO and cheaper but still not what I really enjoy. I am willing to carry a little extra weight for a decent cup of coffee.

For those who want good coffee with not too much weight penalty, you can buy a plastic pour over, bring a few filters and your ground coffee and you're good to go.

Melitta Ready Set Joe Single Cup Coffee Brewer black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0014CVEH6/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_mNZLwbVP0H0VF

That's the way I make coffee at home every day. Makes a dang good cup. Ironically, the Melitta plastic filter holders are both cheaper and lighter (1.6 oz) than most of the "backpacking" systems out there.

I still use Via in the woods though, just to avoid dealing with the wet filters mostly.

Yeah, pour over is the cleanest cup of coffe you'll find. Certainly my favorite, though I use a Chemex at home

People have always called me a coffee snob, and rightfully so. However, I'm sitting here at home on the computer sucking down my morning joe, which just happens to be Starbucks Via Italian Roast. They're good at home, and even better at 11k feet. Not sure what you guys are doing to these things, but I'm willing to bet that I could prepare some of this and place it blind right next to a regular Starbucks Italian Roast fresh from their store, and most couldn't tell the difference.

I think we all expect to sacrifice a little bit when we're in the backcountry. But I don't think I'm sacrificing at all with these. I have plenty of gourmet blends and roasts sitting in my freezer, but I still choose to drink these Via's most the time.

This looks pretty nice and the price is right - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F9ZTL6U
That's what I use. It was a gift from my sister-in-law and it sat in my camp cooking tote for a year or so before I used it. I wish I had used it earlier. It makes pretty great coffee and is pretty bombproof. I forgot it one trip last season and had to use my buddy's folgers tea bag things. Blech.
