Chukar hunting is like elk hunting but with more b*tching. Change my mind.

"The first time you hunt chukar, it's for fun. After that, it's for revenge."

I don't know why, but chukar hunters love to tell people how hard chukar hunting is. How steep the terrain is, how elusive and frustrating the birds are, yada yada. They want you to know they harbor some sort of masochistic derivation of happiness from it. But, dudes and gals hunt the same terrain for elk and mule deer and other stuff but without the show. They just do it, and it's fun, and they don't have to spend time trying to convince you how tough they are for doing it.

Convince me otherwise. (Yes, I'm bored.)

If I only had an elk dog... Chukar hunters complain until they get a shot. Elk hunters typically don't complain about the terrain until after the shot.

Sounds a lot like CrossFit . . .

Have you watched some recent bro youtube elk hunting videos? It's about 50/50 hunting footage versus the guy talking about how extreme the terrain is and how fit one has to be to hack it. Yawn.

I do think chukar hunters cover more ground and hunt steeper stuff than elk hunters on average.

I think when you compare chukar hunting to most typical upland hunts, say pheasants for example, it's a big difference in terrain and that's what chukar hunters have in mind. You also get a longer season when compared to most western big game seasons. I don't hunt them enough to consider myself a "chukar hunter" but do get out occasionally.

Of course things vary from place to place but where I hunt Chukar it's probably steaper than the terrain where I hunt deer and elk. I could also hunt deer where I chase chukar so you have a fair point there. Another factor is that I move alot slower when hunting big game so I end up covering less ground during the same timeframe.

One thing isn't better than the other, just another way for me to enjoy the outdoors.

I don't think there's anything all that different in the terrain, but there are different expectations on how physical hunts should be when you compare pursuing 800 pound animals versus one pound ones. Having hunted both elk and chukar in similar territory, I would say elk hunting is more physical only because you need to pack them out.

If you're not gasping for air Chukar hunting you're probably in the wrong spot.

Even on a successful chukar hunt I think I still burn more calories that I gain from eating the birds.

There’s a reason why they call chukars devils and Hells Canyon is Home to.

Exactly. The braggers about being so tough are the elk and deer hunters, especially any with a YouTube channel.

If I hunted elk the same way I hunted chukar I would not have the energy to pack out meat. Hunting with glass vs a pointing dog is a whole different experience.

If I could use my Drahthaar and longbow to hunt bulls.......oh the dream!

It's easy to shoot a limit of bulls....shooting a limit of chuckar is something you never forget. jennascamerachrismas08030.jpg

The flat brimmed bro’s who pimp themselves as the elite, who “train to hunt” and are infatuated with anything involving social media and self promotion is nauseating...I often wonder with so much self pimping going on, how in the world do they ever have time to even actually hunt

I’ve only recently gotten into chasing chukar and it’s been addicting as anything I’ve done. Theres something about pursuing those lil devil birds in country you likely otherwise probably wouldn’t really be in, watching your dog work while going “just one more” canyon over hoping to just have that one find to have them flush wild, your dog bump them or something else go wrong that makes you obsessed. Those days when the stars align and you get a limit you have a feeling of redemption and accomplishment mixed with vindication.
