I wanted the HC in 300 Win but really disliked the 26 inch barrel so I went with the 300 WSM (23 inch barrel) and am happy with it.

When it comes to recoil tolerance, there is more to consider than your shoulder.
I suffered a torn retina in my right eye several years ago, which I attribute at least in part to over-indulgence in heavy caliber rifles (.375 H&H Magnum).
I think Ontario Honker Hunter may have had similar experience.

I have one in 6.5 Creedmoor and with the brake attached it is like shooting a pellet rifle. Having owned a number of x bolts since they came out I can say you can't go wrong with them. I wish they made one in 280ai.

Hey, it's YOUR rifle so choose what you want BUT you are in a serious minority if you think 6.5's or 270 w/ 140-150's are "optimal" for elk - OPTIMAL elk rounds start at .30 and go up from there - will your "choices" kill elk ? OF COURSE they will but your "bang flops on bulls" numbers I'd guess are lower than a lot of the elk hunters in these parts
Actually, I’m 14 for 14 one-shot kills with 11 DRT using 6.5 bullets on bull elk. Mostly 5-point or better. Can’t really do better than batting 1.000.

The two longest tracking jobs of my life were the results of great hits from a .338 Win Mag and 250gr Partitions. Found both bulls, very dead. One about a quarter of a mile into nasty black timber and the second managed to weave his way through about a mile of more open forest, where he was found about five hours later with both shoulders busted, a hole through each lung and a quarter-size exit wound.
