Choosing a magnum cartridge

300 win mag. More weight and frontal area than 7prc for similar recoil and far more options and common than 300 prc. If wanted to shoot something well beyond 500 the 300 prc pulls ahead with its heavy high BC bullets but that is beyond where I would want to shoot an elk

Any of those will work for your intended ranges and it will become more of a preference issue.

My last choice would be the WSM due to limited selection of ammo. But a great performer.

Next would be the 300 winny. Only because bullets loaded heavy and long plus fast twist barrels are limited in the winny. Not a deal breaker inside of 600 just a preference thing.

Next would be the PRCs due to ammo selection, availability and bullet selection.

For factory ammo availability 300 win mag or 7mm mag. If you reload the I like my 7 PRC.

The younger version of me went with the 338WM. It worked well for me over the years.

The older version of me would choose the 7RM or 7PRC. I now think it would actually work just as well and would be easier to use.

222 Remington Magnum
Perfect!

Specifically within the constraints of the OP I’d go 7 PRC or 7 Rem mag.

Personally, I’ve got enough elk under the belt with 6mm to be quite comfortable, experimenting with 22 cal next.

If you are going for a suppressor get the 7prc. Having a 7 rm or 300wm with a short barrel loses a lot of the speed they are famous for. Anyone of them will do fine.

375 h&h is a goodun to own. Back before I discovered rokslide, I was convinced 375 h&h was the ultimate elk caliber.

I'm getting 2,800fps with 200G ELDXs out of my suppressed 20" .300WM. That's only 60fps less than the factory rating of 2,860 out of a 24" test barrel.

If your choosing from a factory rifle with factory ammunition you clearly should go with the 7PRC or 300PRC. Either will suit your need. As a pure SAAMI spec'd rifle the PRC's are better, period, there is no argument. Now if you were going custom with a custom reamer and hand loaded any of your choices would be fine.

I have or have had all the cartridges you listed and SAAMI spec the PRCs are the way to go as that is the only way to take advantage of the new heavy for caliber high BC factory loads available. Even as a hand loader SAAMI spec'r 7 Rem Mag and 300WM leave a lot on the table with the short OALs

222 Remington Magnum
That isn't really a magnum either, it's faster than the 222 and 223, but not anywhere near a magnum. Compared to the 22-250, 220 Swift and is downright slow compared to the 5,6x57 RWS. However! The 222 Rem Mag in 1958 was introduced before the 224 Weatherby magnum (1963), 5,6x57 (1964) and 22-250 (1965) though not the 220 Swift (1935). So at the time it was more powerful than the 222, and eventually the 223, not it wasn't even a magnum for its time with the 220 Swift eclipsing it years ago. .

Are we using the definition of the word magnum or the use of the word magnum by the manufacturer?

Magnum used to mean a cartridge the most powerful or close to the most powerful cartridge in that bullet diameter at the time of introduction.
