Choosing a magnum cartridge

I think of it in simpler terms if some was going to shoot me but I got to choose between a magnum 30 caliber or a magnum 22 I would pick the 22 every day and twice on Sunday. Now before people go crazy yes I would choose 120 mm out of a m1A2 if I did not want to survive the thought experiment. I would imagine given the choice every 223 will kill em dead member would make the same decision.

Factory Ammo and magnum, 7 Rem., 300 Win., 300 Wby., 338 Lap. If you have a dislike for recoil, Jack O'Conner would tell you to go 270 Win. and be done with it. I shoot a 300 Win.

I'm old, you can't tell me anything, that .22 magnum, .223, 6.5 creed, nope not doing it. I do have a 6mm Remington I will shoot coyotes and hogs with it.

That isn't really a magnum either, it's faster than the 222 and 223, but not anywhere near a magnum. Compared to the 22-250, 220 Swift and is downright slow compared to the 5,6x57 RWS. However! The 222 Rem Mag in 1958 was introduced before the 224 Weatherby magnum (1963), 5,6x57 (1964) and 22-250 (1965) though not the 220 Swift (1935). So at the time it was more powerful than the 222, and eventually the 223, not it wasn't even a magnum for its time with the 220 Swift eclipsing it years ago. .

Are we using the definition of the word magnum or the use of the word magnum by the manufacturer?

Magnum used to mean a cartridge the most powerful or close to the most powerful cartridge in that bullet diameter at the time of introduction.
Anybody who’s going to talk Magnums has to be ready to admit there isn’t a good definition of what makes a magnum and never has been. Historically the name has been a marketing gimmick that never really reached a standard other than a period of a few decades time where it referred mostly to belted rifle cartridges (with some exceptions there too, of course).

In my mind, you could go to a burn rate chart to help with the definition. Somewhere around 4831, if you can get enough powder in the case to hit SAAMI pressure, that case is probably a magnum. That would include “non-magnum” cartridges like 22 Creed, 6-284, PRCs and Nosler, etc, but probably wouldn’t include “name-only” magnum cartridges (350 Rem Mag for example).

If you are going for a suppressor get the 7prc. Having a 7 rm or 300wm with a short barrel loses a lot of the speed they are famous for. Anyone of them will do fine.
This seems to be mostly a wives tail, I haven’t seen any good testing that shows a greater velocity loss from a belted mag than a WSM/SAUM as the barrel is shortened. I’d love to see such testing if it exists though.

The things you seem to gain with a properly throated WSM is equivalent velocities for slightly less powder in some bullet/powder combos. They do this by tacking on a couple thousand PSI to max pressure.

You also gain about half an inch in effective barrel length with a short mag, since barrel length is measured from the bolt face. The short mag gets just a little more runway in the same length barrel, which helps close the gap on a belted mag with slightly more case capacity.

The difference when going from 26” to 24” or 20” is likely more theoretical than measurable.

I love my 300 win mag. Have no reason not to only use it however I just set up my 7prc and my 300prc and 7mm BC is being built as we speak lol. It’s American and I love options but I’d go prc just on data alone. The BC is also awesome for short barrels!

Some amount of overbore ratio should allow for an objective definition of magnum.

The table below uses cubic inches of case capacity (minus the neck) divided by the bore diameter (in inches) squared. This produces a dimensionless number (which could also be derived from ml and mm). Note the ratios for the highlighted cartridges:

I’d use any of the cartridges you mentioned .
I’d wager you’ll select the cartridge you often see on some shelf or web site.

Welcome to Rokslide! Before you settle on a magnum take some time to read these threads. Absorb the content. Then make your decision carefully from there.

Even Rokslide provides all sorts of evidence they don’t believe the mini bullet bla bla bla that’s gleeked out the mouths of the most vocal. If a 22 could kill everything, there would be no need for a 6mm forum. If the cult members were happy with how a 6mm kills things, there’s no reason for a 6.5 forum. The hipocr. . .

Oh, so now because we like to use other stuff, we "don't believe"? I fully believe a 77 grain 22 caliber TMK with an impact velocity above 1800 fps will kill every game animal walking in North America and most of the world. That being said, I also like shooting 120 grain Nosler BTs out of my 7TCU, 123 grain ELDMs out of my 6.5 Grendel, and 147 grain ELDM out of my other 6.5s. Why? Because I can. Do they work "better" than my .223 or .22 Creed shooting the 77s? Nope. But having one rifle is for boring people.

As to the OPs question, a 6.5 PRC is a good choice, but to be honest, given his parameters, a standard cartridge will perform just as good. A 7-08 would be a great choice.

The only hunting rifle I own is chambered in .223... no hypocrisy here. But options are nice for people to choose from 😃

280 AI - I know it isn’t a magnum, but it is magnum performance with an extra round in the chamber. Plus it just sounds cool saying it 😎

And you get to be in the cool kids club b/c it means you are in the know.

If OP really wants to be in the cool kids club, he should get a X-bolt in 6.8W. Magnum performance in a short action.

That is exactly how I felt before I got one. Every time somebody said I shoot a 280 Ackley I thought that guy is legit….now both my son and I shoot one and I think its one of the greatest rounds ever made lol
