I'm a carpenter into drag racing. I do more measurements in Imperial in a week than most people do in a year.

Metric is objectively superior in every possible way. I'd switch in a heartbeat.

A base 10 system across weight and dimensions? Why would you pick the one seemingly developed by a couple of drunk mathematicians?

Lol...Celsius is base 10 huh? I've never seen anyone use milli-degrees or kilo-degrees before. I've seen people using decimal points in Celsius before.....just like they do in Fahrenheit!

The metric system could have adopted Fahrenheit just as easily as it did Celsius and there would be no difference whatsoever. The only difference between the two systems is what reference points they use to determine what is 0 and what is 100 (or absolute zero if you are talking Rankine vs. Kelvin).

I don't really care all that much, just hate when people don't specify what they are using. Big difference between 0F and 0C.

I never understood why people get confused by standard measurements. The 10-base thing doesn’t really simplify the process of understanding a measurement.

How long is a meter? Oh, it’s a 10 millionth of the distance from the pole to the equator. Oh great, that makes perfect sense. But a yard being 3 feet is confusing?

Ask someone how long a meter is and most people will say about 3.3 ft.

I use Fahrenheit because I am from the U.S.A. If I was from somewhere else would probably use Celsius...not that difficult. If kids can't read a tape measure in Imperial and are from the U.S. it is because they are stupid, bad at math, or whoever taught them is bad at teaching it.

Plus when getting dirt or rock I can just say give me a yard of dirt not 0.764555meters

Celsius for obvious reasons, I'm European :)
But here in the US I do use Fahrenheit but have to convert it to really know what temperature it is. 32F I know is 0C and -40F is -40C, but other than that I need to convert. I know 100F is too damn hot for me...

As for the imperial vs metric, how the hell does anyone know what 1/4" is?? I can almost pinpoint what 12,5 mm is but starting this nonsense with quarter inches... gah!
Good thing I rarely have to use it :)

Fair.

In Canada we learn Celsius from day one and it just makes sense to me that freezing is 0 degrees. (We also spend more than half the year below freezing so there's that bias) having freezing at 32 degrees just seems strange and unnecessarily complicated. This thread is more proving a point that people use whichever measurement they are comfortable with and it really doesn't matter one bit or change any outcomes.
Pretty much.

They tried to convert the US back in the 70s, when i was in elementary school. Didn’t stick.

Can’t say i care either way. As someone said, its just to help us dress for the conditions.

Haha. Completely unaware of this threat I was b*tching about Celsius like two hours ago.
They both have their applications. But when it comes to human-centric measurements like the air temperature outside, then Fahrenheit is much more sensical. You want to talk about the melting point of aluminum or the temperature within the layers of the snowpack for avalanche forecasting? Then lets talk Celsius.

Ok here’s the secrets of Fahrenheit.

0*. Butt cold. Better wear thick socks and insulated overalls unless very active.
10*. As above only not quite so bad
20*. Medium socks and long johns
30*. Literally freezing. As above only somewhat warmer. Water bottle left out all night has some ice in it.
40*. Good exercise weather. Jeans and a hoodie will suffice if active
50*. As above, may need to lose the hoodie
60*. Long sleeve shirt over a tee. Might have to lose the long sleeve if active
70*. Perfect. T shirt and shorts. Gonna be warm on you if the sun’s out
80*. Gonna be warm even if you don’t move around. The sun will make you suffer
90*. Swimming, sitting in the shade drinking cold beer Are the only apppropriate activities
100*. Sucks. Sitting in the pool drinking cold beer seems about right.
110*. Why in the f**k does anybody live here? WTF!!??
120*. Nobody in their right mind lives here. 2X WTF. Proper attire is an all white burkha.

ALL of the above are right out the door for those who can wear shorts in all these conditions. They are either tougher than me or derp or both.

I almost feel personally attacked! :)
To me Celsius makes more sense since 0C = freezing point of water. Which is pretty cold. 32F is shorts-temps it feels like.

But I've got a chart, one moment...

Since I'm part Finnish and come from the Eastern part of Sweden, this still applies. And no need to start at any warmer than 5C... :)

Take your 10* - 110* scale and add 60% plus humidity to it and welcome to the south.

I grew up on Celcius (Centigrade, for all the non-base ten believers) but after living in the states for 13 years, I no longer understand it.
When my Mum tells me it's 18° in England, I have literally no clue whether to tell her to take off, or put on a sweater.

I was an telecommunications fabricator at one point. I used to build the satellite & wireless receiver tower base units & the level of squaring precision over a 4 meter long, 2 meter wide & 3 meter high box unit was ridiculous. We weren't allowed a 3 dimensional variation of 50mm throughout the entire structure. I learnt very quickly that the easiest way to get around that was to cop out on metric & use both sides of the tape measure. We'd regularly hear shouts of "22 feet, 2 inch & 11 mil!"
You do what works, as long as everyone agrees! 😄

I mix units like crazy. Temperature above 120F ends up in Celsius, below it stays Fahrenheit. Lengths are imperial until it gets below a millimeter then it switches to metric. Power is all always in kW, weight varies depending on item, pressure is PSI unless I have to switch, on and on it goes.

I've recently found myself estimating in old time measurements like paces, hands, cubits, fingers etc because the actually value doesn't matter I just need to get a good idea of scale. Fractional measurements are nice because you can easy divide stuff in half, quarters, etc visually but dividing by 5 or 10 is a struggle.
