Whether he killed the lion legally or illegally is really no longer the issue (in a sense). Even if all is above board and totally legal, the backlash is huge! Hunting is under immense pressure as a result. If we throw aside guilty or innocent, and just look at the attacks on hunting, we all need to find a way to ensure LEGAL hunting is not stopped. Delta Airlines, Discovery Channel, and many others are fighting against us.

I think we need to focus on how we can best influence any actions over this. Is joining SCI our best option? What else can we do?

For those against Trophy Hunting, we need to face the reality that animals with a value placed on them will survive, those without one probably won't, especially in a place like Africa. Lot of articles out there on the subject if one wants to dig around...

Couple of related questions, not necessarily about this particular case.

I'm sure that Zimbabwe benefits financially from the hunting of lions and other species, and would therefore want it to continue. Why would they do anything to jeopardize that stream of income by banning lion hunting? Not saying that they would or should bury this case, but many seem to think it may lead to a ban on lion hunting in that country. Just seems unlikely in a place where "money talks".

Why do people think that banning the import of lion trophies will stop people from hunting lions? Taxidermy is nice, but I assume many people do it for the experience and conversation as much as the "trophy" to hang on the wall. If hunting a lion were truly on my bucket list, being able to return with the hide would be secondary.

Your first question is something that ice asked myself, and don't have an answer.

Zimbabwe was silent at first, but I assume some $$$ changed hands.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Then you would be in the minority. The same thing has happened with importation of Polar Bears. The USFWS banned the importation of Polar Bears into the US. This effectively stopped any American from hunting Polar Bears.

After many years of associating with the masses of people, not only in this country but also around the world, I now live with the mantra that "people are stupid". But they aren't just stupid, they're blinded to the truth by the god of this world.

This affects every thought, ideal, and philosophy that could ever even come close to their mind. It comes out as chaos, confusion, lies, deception, debauchery, illogical thought processes, lack of reasoning ability....etc.

It shows up in every aspect of life from simple day to day activities, political beliefs, raising a family, morals, and yes.......even the control and conservation of animals ("and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator").

It's only going to get worse.

How to create a social state by Saul Alinsky:
There are eight levels of control that must be obtained before you are able to create a social state. The first is the most important.

1) Healthcare– Control healthcare and you control the people

2) Poverty – Increase the Poverty level as high as possible, poor people are easier to control and will not fight back if you are providing everything for them to live.

3) Debt – Increase the debt to an unsustainable level. That way you are able to increase taxes, and this will produce more poverty
.
4) Gun Control– Remove the ability to defend themselves from the Government. That way you are able to create a police state.

5) Welfare – Take control of every aspect of their lives (Food, Housing, and Income)

6) Education – Take control of what people read and listen to – take control of what children learn in school.

7) Religion – Remove the belief in the God from the Government and schools

8) Class Warfare – Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. This will cause more discontent and it will be easier to take (Tax) the wealthy with the support of the poor.

Does any of this sound like what is happening to the United States?
Alinsky merely simplified Vladimir Lenin's original scheme for world conquest by communism, under Russian rule. Stalin described his converts as "Useful Idiots." The Useful Idiots have destroyed every nation in which they have seized power and control. It is presently happening at an alarming rate in the U.S If people can read this and still say everything is just fine…they are “useful idiots. Yeah...people are stupid but the big government liberals have seized control of our schools and raised this way. Well, except my kids-they went to private Christian schools.

This was pushed into a public spectacle by the ZCTF which is an anti group like Defenders of Wildlife is here. A possible game violation turned into a publicity and fund raising show. The Oxford researcher who refuted the report of the other lions death sarcastically said the the ZCTF was as a reliable news source as the National Enquirerer.

I'm happy to see this thread is finally getting down to the real truth of why this stupid shit is where its at.

Hey boys, you really want to baffle someone? Say "who's Cecil?" to an anti hunter.

I can't believe how Americans and Canadians can just blindly follow the media and keep getting fleeced.

From the NY Times article. This is one of the saddest dynamics to see in our culture.

"We Zimbabweans are left shaking our heads, wondering why Americans care more about African animals than about African people.

Don’t tell us what to do with our animals when you allowed your own mountain lions to be hunted to near extinction in the eastern United States. Don’t bemoan the clear-cutting of our forests when you turned yours into concrete jungles.

And please, don’t offer me condolences about Cecil unless you’re also willing to offer me condolences for villagers killed or left hungry by his brethren, by political violence, or by hunger."

I don't think the legality of this Cecil thing is the issue. The Dentist took all the proper channels to ensure he is within the parameters of the law.

I personally think the issue is Trophy Hunting in general. In my experience people react adversely to killing something just to hang it on your wall as opposed to killing to get clean high quality food.

Yet those same people will gladly throw away meat they purchased at a store and only ate half of.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but isn't a large portion of trophy hunting in Africa not wild animals but animals raised in captivity specifically for the purpose of hunting? That's not really any different than high fence "hunting" in the states and I don't really consider hunting at all. Pretty much just shooting as success is all but guaranteed.

Most of the hunting is HF but its 1000's and 1000's of acres.

HF keeps the poachers out.
