If you take your Carter release apart and parts go flying, you might find this photo very helpful in getting it back together. Some people recommend taking it apart and reassembling it inside a plastic bag to catch those fickle springs that like to launch themselves. I found it easiest to reassemble the internals in a non-cocked position, but then cock it before installing the outer cover as it keeps the springs in place.
