Carbon fiber stocks - DIY tinkering

The process is coming to an end. The stock is finished and ready for being put together.

The paint job followed the same procedure as before, two color sponge pattern and Spraymax 2K matte clear coat. Layers (3) cured in the converted garage fridge :giggle:

:D
What are the components at 7.7pounds? Ie scope etc or even just bare rifle. I'm seriously considering trying out a blaser. Been thinking r93 due to weight but that's a bearable weight to be honest. I'm so used to 6 pounds ready to hunt rifles I can't bring myself to carry something 10pounds

A breakdown of the components:
  • Stock - 19.7 oz / 560g
  • Barrel (21 inch/53 cm, fluted) - 2 lb 10 oz / 1195g
  • R93 action - 29.7 oz / 843g
  • Scope (Schmidt & Bender 3-12x42) - 22 oz / 620g
  • Mount/rings - 4.2 oz / 120g
  • Recoil pad - 2 oz / 57g
  • Suppressor - 5 oz / 142g
Naked rifle with out scope or suppressor is 5 lb 13.6oz (2655 gram). The goal was making it sub 2.7 kg, so quite happy with that.

I've been hunting with both a R8 and R93, and it is a difference. The R93 is a slimmer lighter version, and if carrying it around alot you notice this. I've made a couple of stocks for my R8 (see previous posts) and you can definitely lighten that system as well, but it will always be heavier than a R93 if everything else is equal due to the heavier action. I guess it boils down to removable magazine or not, and if so, can the weight penalty be compensated for with a shorter barrel?

I'll try getting the weight for the R8 action later tonight.

Thanks for the detailed response.
Would love the R8 weight.

I carry rifles a lot and shoot less (when hunting). I already won't run a barrel longer than 18inchs was hoping to setup a 16inch 223 and an 16 or 18inch 22 creed. I've been running Kimbers weighing in around 2.5-2.9kgs scoped and suppressed for so long i really want to stay sub 3.5kgs all said and done using a scope in the 550-750gram range and a suppressor. How do you like that can? I've looked at a few here but I feel like I'd where it out considering the rate I'm eating through DPT baffles.

Try to find an R8-S if you want an R8. no magazine to deal with and it is almost a half pound lighter than a regular R8 Professional.

From an American consumer market, the R8 has some issues on the custom market. There are tons of aftermarket stocks here in Europe.

Here is the R8 action (2 lb 20 oz/964 grams):

In additon the R8 barrels are a bit heavier than the R93 length for length due to the slightly beefier shank.

The can suprises me! Its my first can from Freyr&Devik and it is ridicolus small and light - but it kicks above its class! It removes alot of the high pitch crack. But I regard it as a specialized can for hunting. If maxium suppression is the goal you would need bigger volume. Regarding the thoughness I dont think I'll wear it out. Its has a 3D printed titanium core, so I recon it will last a few rounds ☺️

Did you end up building one for the Sauer 200 STR?
Nay, no build plans for STR (yet 😅). I'm gonna shoot in a discipline/class that requires an unmodified stock, so I gotta keep it original. And even thou it looks like a 2"x4" is actually very good (and optimized).

Yeh i only run 2 baffles on my DPTs plus a braked end cap.on the creed. I just want reduction but run hearing pro 90% or the time for bulke work. Baffles are like $50nzd so I don't mind shredding them. I'll likely only burn 2 sets per barrel with the 18 inch creed and will likely get 3000 rounds per set pretty easy with the 223 with a 16 inch barrel. They still weigh a bit more but they are overbarrel and in the configuration I run them only 2.5-3inchs forward

Do blaser upcharge for the S? I could happily buy a 6XC I think.

I thoroughly enjoyed this thread and much kudos to you. You are obviously a very talented (and patient) craftsman. I must confess envy of your skill and my R-93 and I are drooling over your carbon fiber stock. The comb of a Rokstok on my R-93!!
That makes me wonder…if you ever want to get rid of your R-93 creations, you know, just so you can build a new, better one?
I’m your huckleberry lol.
Seriously, great job. And thanks for taking us on your journey…

Mine has a GRS stock on it. My 2x4 stock is in the attic.

I need to order a Lothar Walther barrel for it, as mine is a 308.

So you can't remove the magazine trigger group from the S, it is the same as the R93. So they didn't use to do that. It was $1000 cheaper than a regular professional.

You would have to call around and see if you can find one.

Bugger I'd buy one if I could but the chances of finding one in NZ is very low and one for sale even lower.

Noted! Never say never, but at the moment I'm enjoying this stock (and the R93) way too much. I recon I've built a stock a year the last five years, so I might get the itch again :) On the other hand, If you were after a R8 stock...

Another treat with the Blasers is the generous magazine box, allowing for long col. I didnt have time to make new reloads before shooting this weekend, so I grabbed a box I made for the Sako. Big difference! I had the smith ream the throat longer than the Sako so I can make use of this extra length. The magazine insert also feeds the AI flawlessly (both R93 and R8, in contrast to the 85 which sometimes troubles even after adjusting the lips).
