Not sure where this question goes, so going here I guess.

I am going to check with the post office next week, but I am hunting in Alaska in May and we are suppose to ship nearly every thing via the post office to Cold Bay, Alaska.

Do you know whether one can legally ship a rifle to yourself via the post office?

I also need to check the current airline regulations as to checking a firearm. It has been forever since I traveled with a rifle. Almost always bowhunting.

As much as I hate referencing the ATF (except in the FTATF or ATF is gay situations):

Yes….I've done it multiple times, I’ve only ever used UPS though, never USPS.

Just be sure to insure it.

Last time I flew to Nebraska, Southwest Airlines was pretty good about it. I used a Pelican case, had a padlock on it, kept the key around my neck on a lanyard. I made a hang tag thay stated "to open please call." Worked just fine, that way I was with them while they checked it, then locked back. No one else had a key, except my buddy for backup.

As others have said, yes you can. However I’d suggest checking with the guide as it may be that you would check it with the airline. This is also perfectly legal and common. Lots of info out there on how to do it and it’s not a big deal. I’d be a little nervous mailing myself a rifle to Alaska. Less so checking it on my flights.
