Sad story indeed and I was glad Cam told all the story about Roy, as I’d only seen bits and pieces of it on Social Media and didn’t know their entire history.

How was your bear hunt?

Listening to him talk about it in the audio book actually got me a little choked up. You could hear Cam breaking down a little talking about his friend. Something about a hard man like that getting upset really got to me. I don't understand all the hate for this guy. I think it's more jealousy. I hear about a guy that runs a 240 mile race and I think it's amazing. Others say why? I would rather read about a person like that that some fat ass sitting in a heated blind over a corn feeder that's "hunting hard" in Texas.

Real tho. I have respect for Cam Hanes. He is a weirdo, and I have no desire to emulate anything that he is known for - running a hundred miles a day or shooting a bow half a mile. But man, that dude is a beast.

This is a small sample size with Cam, but you can tell a lot about how a person really is by their kids.

When his son beat Goggins 24 hour pull up record, that was impressive I’m not even sure Goggins is human. Not many people can override their own brains an push themselves that far and hard, not only can Cam do it he somehow passed it on to his son. Turning little boys into quality men is one of our greatest responsibilities, that sort of drive and determination will play well in life.

I thought the same thing but to when I hear how much time he spends running and working out before and after work I wondered how much time is left to wife and family?

He seems to do it though.

As a father....he never took his family on vacation and proudly proclaims that as one of his "sacrifices" no one else is willing to do. He selfishly uses all his free time for his own hunting trips and goes out of state multiple times a year. At least use 1 of your 3 or whatever weeks off to be with your kids and take them on an adventure. So sacrifice to me goes the other direction to spend time with the kids which is why I'm not a sponsored hunter I guess.

Nobody on earth does that for fun. You do it for the suffering. To see what your mind is capable of. This is what fascinates me about people like him.

I forgot about that part in the book. And it did make me cringe a little bit. I probably forgot about it because as I read through the book it seemed like he was really involved with his family and I wasn’t quite sure what he meant by “we don’t take family vacations“ some families don’t, so maybe that’s what he meant but it did seem weird and I’m with you on that.

I’m the seventh son of eight kids and although we would take vacations it was usually where my dad wanted to go. He was never trying to be my pal or my best friend but taught me how to do everything I needed around the house and yard and taught me to be independent. That I thank him for it.

I see too many families being run by the children these days and it’s not going well.

I think Cam is leading by example the best way he can. As an athlete, accomplished writer, a husband and a father.

Yeah I get that. I milked cows and drove tractor for other people and our family vacations consisted of camping at the local fair showing animals for a week and then after animals were sold we might go some place before getting new ones in the barn. And I would manage the farm I milked at for a week while they went on a family trip once a year to make it work for them. It might only be camping the next county over some times but doing something to get away together was always worth it. Especially looking back as a father and after losing my own.

I'm not saying you have to. But in his case of taking multiple vacations that are all personal enjoyment, maybe need to dial it back and only 3 out of 4 trips are for elk and that 4th one spend with family either at home or tagging along scouting or whatever.
