Long or short?

Yeah, this is another caliber selection thread!
I've always been a big archery guy but in the last year I've become increasingly interested in rifle hunting again. I currently have a somewhat custom Ruger 7RM that shoots better than I can but the gun is very heavy at 11lbs loaded. I would like to get into a lighter gun for backpacking while still maintaining some good accuracy for medium distances. Here's where it will get tricky, I would also like for my wife to pack the gun when we hunt together so I'm looking for a lighter caliber in recoil terms, and something more maneuverable for her.
My main criteria's are as follows:
Lightweight (subjective but I'd like to keep it around 8# or under)
Lighter recoil
600 yards max on deer
400ish on Elk (If I'm expecting longer shots I have my 7RM)
Factory ammo options available
Short action
I've always been a .284 fan so I've looked into the 7-08 as I would still be able to load it heavy in the case she draws moose. Another round really catching my eye is the 6.5CM as well. Preferably, I'd probably go with a 300WSM for myself but as stated earlier, I want this to be a gun my wife can handle too. Out of either gun I'd probably go with a 130-140grain load. I'm entertaining the idea of Ruger Predator in 6.5 as a cheaper gun for her for now and if I like the round I can buy something higher end later on. Thoughts?
I love my .284 but it is getting almost impossible to buy ammo for it. So in the parameters that you laid out, I would personally go with the 7mm08. Have a couple and they are very good shooters and animals keep on falling over when I point and pull the trigger.
This has been a great thread. Honestly I been enjoying a bunch of the cartridge/ gun discussions on here the last few months. It has cost me money though as I have already bought two new rifles in the last six months ...mostly because of this place. My only issue is I don't gun hunt so I am not even sure why the hell I need more rifles!!? But you guys make me want them! You all suck.
Elkguide what are you doing adding a legitimate response to the thread at this point....lol
Good answer however.
Let's get together for lunch again Trials and you can bring them.
I'll buy lunch again and then you can put them in my truck and I'll be glad to "store" them for you!
If I understand what you're asking, there isn't one but won't a bullet with that high of BC be pretty heavy and more recoil and not a good match for a 6lb unbraked gun?
I walked right into, or rather stepped right into that one!!
That bullet is a 180 ELD, so fairly heavy, yes. Didn't the OP ask about an 8lb rifle? An 8lb unbraked 7mag isn't terrible on recoil. A 280 Remington would be even less recoil and not lose that much velocity.
So when shall we get together?
I can make room in my gun safe!
And I promise to feed them good ammo!!!!!!!!!!!
Why won't anybody buy my .280AI? We all know it's the best caliber from mouse to moose.....
