Caliber Selection... Again

He probably did....that is why I always remember a very wise quote from our 16th president Abe Lincoln "never believe a 100% the information found on the internet". If Lincoln said it, it must be good advice.

Man, I guess for my moose hunt in the Yukon next year I should just throw my Cooper .300 win mag in the ocean and buy a 6.5 Creedmore. When the outfitter asks me what happened to my .300 we discussed, I will just show him this thread. I'm sure he will change his outlook then.

These are the days of our lives.....

You mean: "As the Rok Slides"

Doc's mad a Luke, but Luke said he was sorry. Doc is happy with what he's got. But Starky says .797 @ 3,000 is king. Then Robby came home drunk from being out with the girls and found a 6.5 wrapper in the trash and knew that somebody was cheating.

This broadcast brought to you by Kraft Macoroni and Cheese. Good for the kids, easy for mom.

Seriously, so funny and so predictable. Couple more exchanges and it gets locked. And nobody has mentioned that Kuiu has shitty customer service yet.

For what it's worth...this topic has entertained me most of the day while home sick...the other part of the day I was looking at new rifles...damn my wife is going to block this site soon enough.

HAHA so true......of course I said I was sorry.....I should have just said yeah that'll work too....as will most anything.

Won't be the first time I made someone upset with what I said now isn't it ;)

You misquote Rincoln.

Confucius also say: Man who walk through airport sideways is going to Bankok.

WAIT ! a couple months back I got a case of redass for criticizing shooting elk with a .243 ... so I sort of recanted my position ... opened my mind ... saw the light ... today I got a similar case of redass for defending said .243 and 6.5 Creedmor ... MAN ! I can't win for losin'

I have two elk in my freezer courtesy of a .243, should I have redass too?

I have a friend that went on a Polar Bear hunt and said he did not know till the 4th day of the hunt that the guide carried a 243 and nothing else said it was the only gun he ever needed I guess with a set of test tees that big he had to cut down on his rifle weight just to finish a hunt

Jason, (or other with similar experience)
with the .243 are you concerned with quartering shots having enough penetration? One of the arguments I heard years ago, and I know bullets have advanced a long way, is that after a couple hundred yards the smaller rounds were only effective when shot placement was prime. Any shot not broadside basically was considered a gamble. Now to be fair, I also had a guy at a gun store try to tell me that I needed to buy a .338RUM for elk...so i know there is a lot of bad gouge out there. Just curious to those that have the experience to see what you have noticed to be the true limitations of smaller rounds...if there are any.

Thanks,
Shaun

Ok, so I've got a .223, a 6.5 (Swede) a .308, a .30-06, a .280 Ackley, a .35 rem, a .358 win on the way, a .45-70 & two muzzleloaders in .54 & .62

WHAT THE FARK DO I USE!?!?!

I've seen whitetailed deer shot with a .22. Under very good conditions it works. I have had hunters when I was guiding use a .25-06, a .30-30, a .44 Mag 6" S&W, and of course several from sharp pointy fiberglass sticks and lots of other cartridges that elk have fallen from the effects of. I have also seen an elk shot through the lungs with a .338 somehow go almost a mile, uphill!

I personally want to have a hunter that knows their weapon and knows where the bullet is going to hit when they pull the trigger.

For me, I also want to take nothing but broadside shots at less than 100 yards but somehow the elk hunting fairy doesn't always seem to smile happily at me all of the time so I go in "over gunned" just in case.

More recoil, more weight, more drop, more drift, more expense all for less impact velocity, less precision, less shoot-ability.

It might be "splitting hairs" for some people, and if you already have a rifle that's fine, but if buying new it makes little sense to pay more and endure more recoil for less performance..... .

By splitting hairs I just mean that dead is dead and many of these calibers will do the job well. But math is math and I won't argue against the Creed, it just wasn't what I went with and I REALLY like the 270 WSM so far (two seasons, two kills). But I see your point about the Creed being very efficient at what it does and you're right, the OP is asking about a new gun, not trading one for another.

I believe you need to use the 358, but load it down to the ballistics of a .177 pellet rifle.

You need a new gun as you don't seem to have the disputed .243 nor the legitimately faddy not a fad 6.5 creedmoor.

Wowzers did this thread derail.
