The weight difference has to be in the “hand laid carbon composite” stocks. The one gripe I have with my unleaded Mesa is the weight. I haven’t put it in a scale yet, but it just “feels” heavier than I was hoping for.

This entire scenario is pretty disappointing. I was considering a Mesa Ti myself. Glad I hadn't purchased one yet. Seems like you would've been better off sending the Ridgeline back and getting a refund. Between the cost of the Ridgeline and Proof stock you could definitely built a custom or purchased a different high end light weight rifle.

I think if I were going for a lightweight rifle I’d either buy a Kimber, or if you weren't wanting to take that chance(which in my experience I don’t think you’re gonna have a problem), I’d keep my eyes open for a Fieldcraft... or just buy a Tikka SL and restock it?

I have a few Kimber Montana‘s. I like them fine, but I seem to always be working on a new gun project. So far one of the best ”lightweights” I’ve tried is the Weatherby Back Country Ti. 4.9 lbs bare, 6 lbs. 8 oz ready to hunt.

The Fieldcraft has definitely been on my radar also. With that said, my Proof stock will be here today!

You sound like me. I keep thinking I should start paring down my gun safe, I sell one or two, then I end up buying different ones 😂

Had an interesting conversation with Christensen today. Like was stated before, they realize they have an issue and are working on it. The issue Is in the inconsistent weight of the stock. Case and point, my “33 oz” factory stock weighs 41 oz.

I also asked about their Summit Ti version which is $3K more retail than the Ridgeline Ti. In looking at the specs, one can easily see the stock is different/lighter, the trigger is upgraded and the action is different. I asked what makes it worth 3k more than the Ridgeline Ti as the stock only makes up about $600 of that difference. The answer I got was the action. The action is "trued" and FULLY bedded vs. spot bedded. The action also has the integrated rail which the Ridgeline Ti does not. Is that worth $2400? (That's a serious question) If a guy looks around, you can save quite a bit on these Ti's. In fact some retailers have them discounted $2K off of retail. That makes the Ti Summit much more attractive IMO.

Finished product with Proof stock (includes rings and 28 oz NX8): 7 lbs. 4 oz

There was work to do on the Proof stock. Had to Dremel/inlet the bolt release tab. Had to do a little dremel work to make the bottom metal fit and had to do some “shimming” to make the action screws work. Far from a “drop in” and go.

Great looking rifle. The 7lbs 4 oz weight...is that finished product with scope/rings? Great lightweight setup if so. Stinks that it required the added cost (and work) of a new stock though.

Not sure how that price is justified when a high quality action is $1500 or less. So add the value of the ridgeline action to the diff and they are valuing their action at $3k, that’s just insane.

I’ve been following your 4.9 lb Weatherby story as well. You went through a rough couple transactions there! Besides weight, was there any difference in the Weatherby Backcountry Ti and the Backcountry? Were you able to see both in person?

Thanks

This is a huge disappointment from CA. Its completely unacceptable to have that much deviation in weight. A 33oz stock weighing 41oz on a rifle we pay a premium for due to the weight should be a huge embarrassment to CA. Just when i thought CA's quality control was improving again and they do this.

To answer a few questions:

*Havent been able to shoot because the wind is ROARING here lately. Maybe tomorrow morning.
*7.4 is ready to hunt with a 28 oz Nightforce NX8
*The price isn’t justified, but I got into this with an overweight Mesa and tried to make it work. I agree totally with your assessment tdhanses.
*Yes, Ive had a crazy ordeal with these two production rifles. I’ve seen a regular Back Country and own the Ti. Ti is a few oz lighter, just like their marketing says. Other than that they are similar.
*I agree 100% on the Christensen stock being GROSSLY overweight. The Proof Stock came in exactly as advertised at 20 oz. If it weren’t for the Proof comparison, I’d think my scale was off!

Kotaman, have you had a chance to shoot with the proof stock am curious if it helped in the accuracy, balance overall feel. I have a ridgeline in 300wsm that I would like to lighten up some.

That proof stock looks like you'd need a Dikembe Mutombo length trigger finger to touch the grip and pull the trigger at the same time.

A couple things to respond to the above. I don't think the "reach" is any different than any other stock I've used. Must be an optical illusion with the photo.

I gave up on this project and sold the rifle. When I ordered the stock, I was told by Stocky's that the only thing I would need to do is "inlet" the bolt release tab. The rest would be "drop in". I took a dremel and inletted the tab. Easy so far...I went to add the bottom metal and it didn't fit. After a little more dremel work, I got the bottom metal to fit. However, the bolt would not pick up rounds out of the mag so the depth wasn't quite right. The gun shot lights out and the balance/feel was fantastic with the new stock feeding it one at a time, but I could not get it to feed reliable. I put the original stock back on the rifle and sold it. End of project...Anyone want to buy a "dremmeled" Proof Stock for cheap? :)

If it was a long action, absolutely!
