BYU or University of Utah for daughter?

Utah State grad here, BS in Mechanical Engineering. I would put it on the list for consideration as others have mentioned. It sits in between BYU and the U on the conservative scale. Plenty of wholesome kids with good values, but without some of the weird quirks associated with BYU. Also Cache Valley is one of the most beautiful areas in the state. I'd live there in a heartbeat if there were more job opportunities. Probably a bit less competitive, and easier for her to get a scholarship vs. the other options.

No we are not
I’m from Utah and grew up there. Since you’re not LDS I would send her to University of Utah. Even if you were LDS I’d probably still recommend Utah over BYU. Utah is a fantastic school and as others have said here, your daughter will be under a lot of pressure to convert to LDS and get married if she goes to BYU. Don’t under estimate the hurdles she will face at BYU

LOL not to me as a father it sounds fantastic! If my wife learns about this she will want her to go immediately. We don't want our kids going to school with highly permiscuis kids. Except the coffee part. How can a person graduate without drinking coffee to stay up late and get up early to study? Anyway the old York times is terrible and anti tradition values. That looks more like a hit piece.
Thats funny....most are married with 4 kids by the time they are 22.

Holy cats that place sounds terrible.
Yup that paragraph sums it up well. I couldn’t imagine even entertaining the idea of sending a non LDS kid there unless it was 100% their idea. In which case we would then have a long hard talk... I lived in UT for 6 years and absolutely loved the outdoor experience. But holy heck no!

Another vote for checking out USU

I get it and don't have a daughter so i cant put myself in your shoes. It sounds like your daughter has good head on her shoulders though. I'm not sure that paying a school that is eager to slut shame your daughter for someone touching her boob and pressuring marriage just to feel ok about satisfying the natural urges is a better alternative.

Agreed that the NYT is terrible and that probably is primarily a hit piece. But for cripes sake, they kicked a guy off a football team for doing the no pants dance.. thats wrong.

I moved to SLC and lived there for 4 years after college. Neither my wife or I are LDS. It is an awesome city to live in for outdoor activities, but the culture is way different than anywhere else I lived. The others here are spot-on that there's no way I would send my non-LDS daughter to BYU unless the goal is to find her a husband and a couple kids by the time she got a bachelor's degree. My wife was part of several female professional groups during our time there and the college dropout rates for women in Utah were staggering.

Nope, my brother has lots of kids in his classes that aren't. Doesn't make a difference, kinda how I could attend Notre Dame even though I'm not catholic. No different.
I think it is quite a bit different. Quick google search showed Notre Dame to be about 70-80 percent catholic while BYU is 98-99 percent LDS. I had many LDS friends growing up and they have wonderful family values, but LDS in my town growing up stuck to themselves somewhat outside of school etc. LDS was there family and friends, not practicing the religion may make you feel like an outsider.

Well, I'd go to Alabama, Clemson, or the University of Georgia, with the latter having great engineering programs, college life, and just general fun. She can always move to Utah after school.

*** Edit to say Clemson and UGA have good engineering programs. All 3 have excellent Nursing programs. Out of state would probably be within your wheel house for budget at all 3

I gained tons of life experience in college that has helped me more over the years than my degree has. College is about more than just getting a degree and being on the straight and narrow path to success. I’m glad I didn’t try to pad all the corners and edges in my college career. Learning how to control myself, manage my time, prioritize my schedule, and how to avoid people that were damaging all were learned in college. I partied, studied, played a sport, and learned life lessons. If you want her to go to a boring ass school where everyone things a certain way and no one pushes the limits then how are you supposed to learn about yourself?? I’m a big proponent of gaining knowledge by experience instead of through a book though, I wouldn’t trade my college experience for anything because it’s helped me in every aspect of my life.

Have you talked with her about where she wants to go?? Sounds like you have some ideas for her, but what are her own thoughts?

Graduated from the U of U. It is a great school and would recommend to anyone. The salt lake valley is a great place to live and many employment opportunities after graduation if she wants to stay.

Don't get is twisted, Mormons get the same urges every 18 yr old does. In fact Mormons are pretty creative satisfying those urges while maintaining ones purity. I wont burst your bubble on here, just google it if your curious.

She's interested in going to school in Utah. My in laws live in South Jordan. She loves to ski!!! Right about gaining experience etc. I don't really want or expect her to go to a convent. I'd like her to go to a school with more not less kids from Conservative traditional backgrounds. Those kids make mistakes and get into trouble of course. Where we are now in San Diego in the public schools, charter schools even the majority of kids like 70% are from broken homes. 30% broken homes would be nice. My kids complain to me about the other kids.

I'd like something in the middle, is that possible?

Wherever my daughter goes to college there is a huge chance of her meeting her future husband. Nothing wrong with that, so long as there is a large pool of potential son in laws. Of course it's up to her, and I'd like her to wait and take her time. However, she really enjoys relationships, not like a butterfly. I think she'd like to marry young. Whatever is best for her and makes her happy is what I want. Thanks!!

U of U and Utah state would both serve her well and provide her with a great learning opportunity. SLC is very conservative as a whole.
