BYU or University of Utah for daughter?

From what i've seen, SLC is full of the same people who would live in LA or chicago, just quirkier. not sure about how BYU would be, though

That's what I was afraid to hear. No, she doesn't know yet. She said she's interested in being a hospice nurse or maybe an elementary teacher, which are noble professions, however, she is BEST at math, but doesn't love it. My wife and I think she'd make a good engineer and are encouraging that route.

With that in mind, my daughter would go to JC for 1 to 2 years, then a UC.

My wife has been hiring engineers for 20 years and the three different fortune 500 companies she worked for were only concerned with what specialty their degree was in, sometimes their GPA but rarely, and if they graduated.

The first two years have no bearing on their job projects after graduation.

Occasionally they will go a school when they are looking for a specific type of engineer, but the first two years still don't matter. It is irrelevant to anything after graduation when job hunting.

Engineering is frequently in the top three for people who have the most wealth later in life. I'm unsure why, but the career has so many opportunities and different ways to make a living with the knowledge from degree.

My wife and I both graduated from the U. I did my understudies at the local community college (SLCC) to save some money, then got my BS in mechanical engineering. Wife did communications with minor in business (pretty generic degrees) and her career path has taken her to marketing and sales. I really liked the U and definitely partied hard, but graduated with honors and had 3 very respectable job offers before walking. I highly recommend you have her work/intern to beef up the resume and really drive the work ethic home.

As a non-LDS Christian, I could not imagine going to BYU. It's just too much of a culture shock to me. The early marriage thing is real, baby making is real, high divorce rates are real. Sure there is the values side, but I'd have her visit before committing. Coming from Cali, she may be really uncomfortable in Provo.

Even at the U: I had multiple LDS colleagues have kids their final semesters, some of which I carried then through because they were so exhausted. Priorities seem a little out of whack...

Coming from Cali, she may be really uncomfortable in Provo.

Both my kids are VERY uncomfortable in San Diego. San Diego is a cultural shock for me and my family. We are constantly getting shocked. We are a traditional, conservative, Christian family. Neither have my wife and I been divorced or have our families. When I'm in Utah other than SLC I'm culturally calmed. My daughter did have a very good friend who was LDS when she was in elementary. LDS are noticeably more morally pure and more family oriented than we are.

If your not LDS, BYU would be low on the list. Its a different culture.

U of U is probably the party school of Utah. Its not going to be that much different than most any other colleges

USU is a hidden gem in my opinion and would probably more align with what you are looking for.

I grew up in an LDS family in Rexburg Idaho, 5 blocks from BYUI. I am not active anymore but went to USU. It was/is a great school. I think you daughter would have better luck finding friends with similar beliefs and values than if she went to BYU. I was able to find friends that aligned with my beliefs, some LDS some not.

Also, no you cannot gain residency in Utah while on the WUE but you can receive it every semester at a rate of 150% resident tuition.

Agree to everyone's above questions on being LDS. Secondly, what does she want to study? Each of those universities have better programs for some degrees. If it is Engineering or really any Science I would not recommend either. I actively recruit from both of these Universities and this is not their strong point vs some of the other Universities around the country.

I don't know that this is necessarily accurate. For the record, I'm not a BYU guy, but I know a number of people with degrees from there, and they do well in the workforce. Their Chem-Eng. program places a lot of graduates in high-paying petroleum industry jobs, which are very competitive. Not sure what kind of positions Dan is recruiting for, but maybe it just doesn't attract the cream of the crop there.

I have worked in 43 different states over the past 10 years. I love to see the country and have enjoyed 90% of the places I have been. SLC is easily in the top 5% of places that I NEVER want to go again and there is no way I would consider sending one of my children to live there...

Nothing worse than choosing a degree and future occupation/career doing what you don't like.

To be a good engineer, you have to like it. If she is an outdoorsy type, there are other options that doesn't have a focus in differential equations and Rankine cycles.

Have you considered Utah State up in Logan? They have an Outdoor Product Design and Development program offered through the College of Agriculture that may spark an interest.

Computer science departments are both quite strong at both schools. Use high degrees of math is required. Just a thought.

I'd highly recommend again that you visit both.

I did my entire undergrad at USU for less than 50K. In fact, less than half that.

That doesnt count living expenses, you have to pay those either way.

LOL not to me as a father it sounds fantastic! If my wife learns about this she will want her to go immediately. We don't want our kids going to school with highly permiscuis kids. Except the coffee part. How can a person graduate without drinking coffee to stay up late and get up early to study? Anyway the old York times is terrible and anti tradition values. That looks more like a hit piece.
