God I love steelhead fishing! Did you get the permit on a fly? Kudos to you if you did!

I have been addicted. It is nice to have a distraction between hunting seasons.really big perch.....
That is the fattest fish I have ever seen.
Im one of those weird catch and release buffalo guys. These fish can live to be over 100 years old, grow to massive size and are difficult to catch on hook and line. My favorite fish by far. Many people call them carp or confuse them with carp but they are in the sucker family & native to the USA.
Pics 1-3 are smallmouth buffalo from 3 different Texas reservoirs.
The last 2 are bigmouth buffalo from AZ.

That looks awesome! But a little dangerous for me lol.Great to see the catch and release ethic coming to prevalence with this fishery. Sad to think about guys shooting fish three to four times as old as them in bowfishing tournaments just to send them to a dumpster.
Atlantic Sheepshead aren't quite in the centenarian ballpark, but the larger ones can get to 10-15 years old. We do hunt them as they are great eating, but most of the freedivers I know generally limit themselves to one or two a day. Not exactly a super popular subset of diving either... we have aggressive currents, generally quite low viz and some very large sharks.

Im 100% for taking fish to eat and I harvest eater size catfish bycatch often. I'm sure bowfishing for a few fish for the table would be a ton of fun, but those guys killing buffalo and gar and stuff and throwing them away by the barrel full just aren't sportsmen.
I am a little biased though after encountering a few different boats full of drunks talking about how they just needed to kill some stuff.
Wanton waste is wanton waste imo. No different from shooting a deer and leaving it to rot.
I have heard the same about buffalo being great eating. There used to be a thriving commercial fishing operation for buffalo in Arizona. One of these days I'll probably keep a young 8-10lber to try.I've been told that buffalo is excellent eating.
Agree about not killing stuff to throw it away.
My fishing is geared more towards the frying pan, we have tons of opportunity down here for catch & release but with the time and cost involved in fishing, I'd rather target eating fish.
