Book recommendations

I will second The Frontiersman, by far the best book I’ve read.

Blood and Thunder was also good.

I’m currently reading 1776, it’s okay.

I will likely try endurance next.

A suggestion that was made on another thread on Rokslide is “The Comfort Crisis” by Michael Easter. Wow. I’m still spinning.

A recommendation I recently got on an Africa related hunting forum is called “A Handful of Hard Men” by Hannes Wessels. No. it is not gay porn. Incredible stories of the Rhodesian Bush Wars which we never learned about in CO public school.

"Fearless" by Eric Blehm. About a SEAL who overcame drug addiction and became a member of DEVGRU. The biggest thing I took from that book was the role his family/wife played and how important they were in his life.

I've been trying to get back into reading, so I've started this book which came highly recommended.

So far it's been good.

Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage
Book by Alfred Lansing

"is a 1959 book written by Alfred Lansing, about the failure of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton, in its attempt to cross the Antarctic continent in 1914."
One of the best books I have read. It was hard to believe it was a true story.

River of Doubt. Teddy Roosevelts near death expedition down a jungle river.
The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway
anything by Cormack McCarthy except “The Road” which is really good but will make you want to kill yourself.
American Caesar, the biography of Douglas McCarthur
The Last Full Measure, story of the 1st Minnesota Vols. At Gettysburg
American Scoundrel biography of Dan Sickles..an interesting asshole.
Great River, By Paul Horgan, a soup to nuts history of the Rio Grande

Edit: if you think you’ll like Baxter Black, check out Waddie Mitchell

Blood and Thunder

The “Big Sky” series

No Country For Old Men

Outliers

David and Goliath - Underdogs, Misfits, and More (or whatever it’s called by Malcolm Gladwell)

"The Terminal List"

Don't stream the series. I like Pratt, but they totally destroyed the story when they created the series. I could only stomach 1.5 episodes.

I completely agree with this. Nothing against Pratt, but from the 1.5 episodes I watched as well, I thought it was it was poorly produced and changes too many things from the book. I don’t think I’ll watch much more.

In the last month I finished reading True Believer which was good, but not as good as Terminal List.

I also listened to Over the Edge of the World about Magellan’s exploration around the world and am now listening to Kingdom of Ice about the expedition to the North Pole.

I’m currently reading The Obstacle is the Way and have Cam Hanes’ book Endure on deck.

Anything Cormac McCarthy, the Border Crossing trilogy is especially good. Also Boone by Robert Morgan. And Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry is always good.

Highly recommend The Comfort Crises.
Great book on how Soft we have become and what to do about it.
