I finally didn't miss so Greta nabbed her first rooster. We picked up all the birds planted plus a bonus Chukar she found that escaped previous hunts.

Last week was incredible! Willow is really getting the hang of this bird hunting thing. It's amazing that a dog that I didn't train very well is flushing and retrieving like she is. She frigging loves it and I am really getting more into it too after never hunting with a bird dog before and just casually bird hunting.

Monday we took a quick trip after work and we got our first grouse together! Not for her lack of ability but I was on a miss streak of about 6 shots! She flushed it ten yards to my left and I easily dropped it as it flew into the 25 mph wind it was not the toughest shot ever.

Wednesday another quick trip after work we got a grouse right off the bat. She flushed it about 20 yards out and I made a great quick shot on it. She later trailed a woodcock in a complete circle around me before it flushed and I took it down.

Friday we headed out to another one of my grouse spots and we got 2 grouse, which was actually my first grouse limit ever! The first one I flushed and thought I missed but took Willow over in that direction just in case. About 130 yards from where I initially shot she chased it down. We worked for two hours to get another flush and she put one up out of range which was my fault because I was getting lazy about reeling her back in. When she got birdy again not 5 minutes later I got ready and put down our second with a nice easy crossing shot!

We made a little time to chase roosters when we were Idaho deer hunting.

Toss in some competition and suddenly my oldest dog is no longer gun shy and hunts. Go figure.

We put in a lot of miles today in an area I haven't hunted before. All we found was lots of cold.

Here are our guys.
Pedro is 6 months old now. Incredible Chocolate who just wants to please. We'll be getting him on birds next fall. He's got such a will to please, and weirdly enough not only retrieves, but points. We have 2 other dogs, an older Black lab who is 10, and a wolf cross who is 5.
