Gypsy (1/2 shorthair, 1/2 lab) and I spent the Alaska Day holiday pushing above all the woody vegetation and finding a covey of white-tailed ptarmigan. We took one and then dropped back to the truck to do chores at home. Even a couple hours beside the dog makes for a great day.
I took Hank out in an area with pheasants while my wife was deer hunting this Sunday. I was half heartedly rabbit hunting, but it more was about getting him out there. This was only the second time he's been in pheasant territory. I was pleased as he flushed 13 roosters in 3 hours! Not bad for a shelter dog. We're excited for pheasant season later this year. ( Neither pic is from this past weekend )
Took Willow, my 1.5 year old Lab out yesterday for the first time on some dumb stocked pheasants (also my first time hunting them). So proud of her!
She's a field lab with what I understand to be a pretty great pedigree, but I never really trained her quite like I intended to. I focus on deer hunting and any bird hunting I get to do is a bonus. Well, I am tagged out early this year so we'll see what we can do together.
For her first time with basically no training, she did really, really well. I always knew she had birdy instincts because we flush quite a few grouse just hiking around, and she gets realy proud of herself and I always praise her when she does. So I guess that does count for some informal training. Biggest thing is she stays too far out and doesn't quarter through cover very well but with just a little practice controlling her yesterday we were doing pretty well. She had 8 flushes yesterday, and I took my limit in 45 minutes and that was with 3 easy misses by me and a couple I couldn't get shots at. Going to chase these dumb things around a couple more days to get Willow some more practice before we head for grouse. It's been 5 years since I shot clays so I hope I can get a little practice too before we hit the grouse woods.
Milo fields were tough yesterday on Greta's second hunt. Even the planted birds were running but we both learned a lot and enjoyed the cat and mouse game we played with a few roosters.
This is Wooly. He didn't get a ton of feathers in his mouth last year due to his awful hunting partner but... he did finish the year with two mallards, about a dozen wood ducks, three fox squirrels, and a beaver.
