I have the altai hoks with the universal binding and also bc ski a lot. The universal binding is fine for very low angle more compacted snow but once you get into softer snow or start side hilling, I think you'll really miss the support of ski boots.Yea my "big" bc skis are 164ish and 88 underfoot. They float plenty well and are pretty stable... But that's the biggest ski I've ever used. My others are same length and 76 under foot.
I figured the universal bindings would be garbage for going downhill, but thought they may be worthwhile for low angle long distance traverses. I haven't looked at prices, so it may be more worthwhile selling my aliens and getting an on sale pair that fit better.
