I have a Manfrotto 190 with the Leica bino adapter. I'm open to basically any options for spotting but leaning towards SLC 10s, anyone have any advice regarding model and power? Mostly using for spotting Wasatch area in Utah.

It would be our pleasure to discuss this with you. If you have the time to give us a call, 516-217-1000 we are in tomorrow from 8-8 eastern time.
Have a great evening
Doug

For dedicated tripod use I’d go with 15s or 18s. That said I still throw my 9x mavens on the tripod when scanning quickly or glassing at very low light.

Not much help but literally every Bino is better mounted to a tripod.

I have 8x42, 10x30, 10x42 and 15x56. They’re all tripod mounted. I carry the 8’s and 10’s on my chest also as they’re my primary glass. The 15x are for tripod only use. All serve their purpose.

Dedicated tripod glass I would look at 12x and up. If you want a do it all pair, the 10x42 SLC is a great option. I use the 10x30 companion and the 10x42 EL. Both are great in the hand and on the tripod.

Yeah was kind of looking at the Vortex 18 Kaibabs as well, should be able to pick them up fairly cheap with the new UHDs coming out.

Yeah your probably right I will take a look at them. I moved to Wyoming recently so I could probably pay them a visit at their shop.

This is spot on-100% agree.

A bit of echo from everyone else, but I bought a set of 10x42 slc on rockslide for this season, and I couldn’t be happier with them on my chest rig or on the tripod. I carry 18 kaibabs for strict tripod use as well. The kaibabs are great value bino. I seen them selling here for sub 850 on occasion.

This picture was taken with the slc

Depends on your type of hunting. If you are a backpack hunter then you don't want a lot of weight. I used to pack a pair of 15's in my pack, carry a set of 10's on my chest and pack my spotter. Too much. I felt like the 15's were not much better than the 10's on a tripod. I did a comparison which reinforced my thinking and I sold the 15's and never looked back. Now I carry 10's on the chest and use them on tripod. And carry spotter. I find this to be the best combination for backpack hunting.
Now truck hunting is a different thing. I use 10 power on tripod, 35 power BTX bino/spotter, and spotting scope. I've read where some people will not pack a spotting scope and will pack 15 power bino's in its place. Personally I cannot live without a spotter and feel that its too important of a tool to leave behind. So again, your style will dictate what you want to use. Fatrascal.

Well my tripod is the Manfrotto 190 aluminum model so it may never see a back pack anyhow. Interestingly enough you can pick up the Vortex UHD 18X for same price as SLC 10s. The GoHunt optics guy was really impressed with them, wonder if they will outperform the Maven.

I can see the wasatch range out my bedroom window... I have Vortex Viper 12x50 and was able to pick out our house by the row of trees in front of it from a mountain 24 miles away (line of sight). High power is overrated IMO

If you want the very best go with either Swaro or Leica! I would buy a pair of demos or nearly new Swaro or Leica before buying anything else....definitely worth every penny of your investment. Also, I would highly recommend 10x binos plus a spotter. The newer model 10x binos with rangefinder are pretty amazing and will save you having to lug around both.

I agree with Jimss. Higher power is secondary to optical resolution, clarity. Call Doug; I just got Leicas from him and am excited that they are supposed to arrive tomorrow. I got a pair in 1993 to see white goats next to white rocks in white snow. It was past time to modernize. A bigger but fuzzier picture doesn't help. Bigger and very sharp does help some.
