Honestly, is squirrel really that good that you would put it above deer or elk?

Never tasted Elk. Fried squirrel is literally my favorite meat. I grew up living on squirrel, so it has a special meaning, and I have acquired a real craving for it. I do love venison, but even backstrap doesn't taste as good to my taste buds. Which is a good thing, because I can grab a squirrel a lot easier than backstrap.

Elk is my #1
Caribou is good as well.
Snapping Turtle is great for an off the wall choice.
I eat the hearts out of pretty much all the critters I kill, from deer to squirrels, its some of the best meat to be had out there.

I am probably late on this thread but yes caribou can be good but is very lean. Dall sheep and Bighorns are both good eating but if I had to pick the best wild game I have eaten it would be the Axid deer I shot in Texas.

The deer species IME:

1.Sitka Blacktail
2.Columbia Blacktail
3.Mule deer
4.Whitetail

Looking forward to trying Coues deer, and I’m guessing it falls pretty low on this list.

Axis deer, elk and sheep are some of my favorites. I would be perfectly content to only eat southern Michigan Whitetail for the rest of my life tho.

I have come to the conclusion that preparation is everything and any wild meat when prepared right is delicious. But if I was to choose one animal to eat, I guess it would be elk. I have never had Axis, but with all the votes for it, I may have to try it.
