Backstop Recoil Pad

Ya seems very gimmicky. I'll stick with limbsaver. I highly doubt it's any better at all.

I just ordered one to try on a relatively lightweight 300 WSM. I personally like Jim's channel and am a bit of gear nut so why not try something new, support someone who promotes hunting and shooting and seems to be a good family guy while doing it? The recoil pad might just turn out to be great!

I finally got to the range to test these out in my 7PRC and 22 Creedmoor. Overall I think it is a great upgrade to the HNT26. Felt recoil is so difficult to quantify and accurately compare, but I did feel a marked improvement after adding the backstop. I did notice as others have mentioned that the structuring does capture and hold quite a bit of dirt.
I will really start putting it through its paces soon in the back country!

It is an awesome action! Best bang for the buck out right now in my opinion. It is so feature rich for that price point!

You make a valid point about the data. That bothered me too when I watched the video, but I am a chemist so I realize I’m already prone to nerdom and questioning data. Nonetheless, he’s got my attention. If he comes out with a pad that fits the XLR carbon buttstock, I’ll likely try it for my lightweight 7saum.

Just watched the video. It’s really annoying that he doesn’t use units in his graphs. That being said, people talk about stuff here (like stock design etc) while showing zero actual data (no accelerometers, no pressure sensors, no nothing) so it’s kind of hard to knock him for that?

How much does a recoil pad actually flex/compress during a shot? With all the high speed cameras capturing all sorts of firearm related stuff, I can’t find a single video or frame grab showing actual compression of any recoil pad by any company.

I've used one extensively this summer on a heavy recoiling Tikka. Spend half the money (or less) on a Limbsaver AirTech pad, they work better than the more expensive backstop.

I picked one of these up and have only 15 or so rounds with it. I have it on my Bergara B14 ridge carbon wilderness in 300winmag. Those rounds were at a range just getting it sighted in and some fun shots. I have no comparison to anything other than the stock pad but it's definitely an improvement. Below are my very super scientific initial impressions.

• I didn't notice any shoulder soreness or sharpness in impact compared to the stock one. It felt like it didn't hit as hard or was more prolonged like it built up then ramped down vs a huge hit. A noticeable change in feel, I think for the better.
• What was markedly improved was being able to reacquire the target and spot my impact. That was a very noticeable positive change.
• Fit and Finish - You can tell its a 3d printed item. Not necessarily a bad thing though just doesn't have that super refined machined type impression. But there's no rough edges or things that make it feel incomplete or rushed, in that regard it's totally fine.
• Worth the cost? For me so far, yes it is. I have never used a limbsaver or anything other than the stock pad so my comparison isn't much. But for an item under $100, I don't sweat that cost much compared to something in the $50 range for example.
• For Jim himself - I can see the snake-oil/salesey type impressions based on his delivery, but he is a solid dude and he is truly passionate about what he delivers. I do trust anything he puts out he does believe in and not just going for a quick money grab.

If anyone is looking for another HNT26 option, OBI has been producing a similar one for a while now. I don’t have experience with the backstop, but the OBI Cush Pad has been a huge upgrade over the MDT. It’s quite a bit less expensive too.
