Ok so now that my big game season is over I'm dreaming about next spring and summer and getting back in the mountains. One thing I would like to do is some early scouting / fishing / reason to get out and in Gods beauty trips.

My initial google searches for backpack able spinning rods run the gauntlet from extremely cheap to way more than I want to spend. So my question is what do y'all use. I don't want to waist money on something nicer than I need to catch trout but don't want something so cheap that it breaks when I'm 20 miles from the truck.

Also I know nothing about fly fishing and don't really want to go that route right now.

Thanks
Josh

Get the St Croix 4 piece and a decent shimano reel in the 1000 or 750 size and pack it with some good 4lb test

You might forget it's in there and drop your bag, or cinch things up without having thinking. I'd run a cheaper set up. I have a light packable set up I've used for 4 yrs with great success. I've caught small trout here in Colorado with and smallmouth bass in northern Wisconsin with it. It was about $35 or $40. Looks like they are $50 now. Here's a link. I bought my wife one after she used mine this summer in Wisconsin.

For carrying on a pack I like an ice fishing rod. You can buy a medium action walleye jigging rod, they are short, tough and have enough backbone that you can cast them a long ways. You can get a pretty nice Fenwick, my choice, for about $40. Any cheap ultralight spinning reel will work on it. The shorter rods work great for packing.

Thanks guys.
The st croix rods are alittle more than I want to spend.

Any other combos being used out there

I have always thought about getting a Tennessee handle made to use with a section or two of a fly rod. However, there a a bunch of 3 and 4 piece rods that should suit you fine. Fenwick and diawa both make one that are of decent quality and are around $80

St Croix rods are great, but I cringe every time I pack my $150 rod. Hence why I have 2 rods that I pack. If I am going somewhere in CO where I am unlikely to have to deal with anything over 1lb I use a Daiwa Spinmatic UL 6'6" with Pflueger President size 20 with 4lb test. When I go up to MT I bring my Eagle Claw Pack-It 6'6" Medium with Pflueger President size 25 or 30 with 8lb test. Both of these setups are cheap enough that I don't worry about beating them up in my pack. The pack-it is certainly cheaper quality than the trailmaster as mine started to form a crack after not a ton of use, but at $15 a pop who cares.
