Interest in a fly fishing forum section?

12+ lb bonefish is huge. Can't imagine how loud your drag was screaming.

Yeah it's wild, especially when your only prior bonefish experience was on small 2-4lb Carirbean ones. After fishing for bigger bonefish a couple of times, the next time I was in Mexico I Tod the guide I didn't even want to cast at bonefish, I told him to just look for permit and tarpon. Those ones in the carribean are cool fish but they are like 18" long, they don't even hardly hit the drag.

The first one I hooked in hawaii, I didn't let go of my line fast enough and it bent the hook and got away.

The same argument can be made for hunting. Yet rokslide continues to survive. Reality is there isn’t much to spot burn at this point anyway. You can find it if you look hard enough. And the big ones like Yellowstone or gunnison aren’t exactly secrets, although some like to pretend they are

Significantly more people fish than hunt. CO sells over 900k fishing licenses annually v. roughly 300k hunters. There is no secret water out here, but people posting about less pressured water certainly is not going to help. That’s why RS doesn’t allow talking about specific units. I know of at least 3-4 high alpine lakes in CO that were hog pens until some bozo posted them online, and now they’re shot.

The FB groups have been effectively wiping out high country lakes since Covid. What a dumb idea to pay half the country to go camping. Zuckerberg doesn’t give two two craps what his platform does to people between the scams, out of control groups, and magnifying misinformation. It has helped people to stop using common sense, get old high school friends laid, and that’s about it. Russia loving low life. Hope he gets a big barbed salmon fly in his eyelid.

As for discussing fly fishing I thought that’s what we’ve been doing in the general forum. 🙂

I agree it’s in the general forum. Would be nice to have a more structured area for it though. Wont happen I’m sure. Just a dream while I’m stuck inside during snow storms.

You have my vote - it would get more use than some of the current sub forums.

Maybe combine small game and fly fishing?

Lol, I thought it was a fly fishing forum. It is where I get most of my Backcountry
gear ideas. I joined RS over a decade ago while planning an Elk hunt out West
with my two boys. After a discussion with the boys about who was carrying 200lbs
of meat off a 6000' mountain, we decided to stick with carrying a few trout down a
mountain or continue dragging a hog or Whitetail 1/4 mile would be much
more to our liking. I have not found a better resource for backcountry fly fishing:)).

Lots to discuss between rivers, lakes, dry fly, wet fly, dead drift, then there's fly tying and entomology plus lots more.

I’m trying to get back in the habit of tying flies for this years trips, salt and fresh. I’m not sure how it happens but I own about $20k (seemingly) in tying materials but never seem to have the exact thing I need…

I think it’s a conspiracy.

I am going to Colorado and am trying fly fishing for the first time. Any beginner tips?

Are you going alone? If so, swing by a local fly shop. Ask for advice on local waters and which tippet & flies to use.

Whats the Tikka of the fly rod world? Whats the SWFA, Maven, and Nightforce equivalent for reels?
Tikka = Echo

SWFA = Redington

Maven = Lamson

Nightforce = Galvan

Swarovski = Winston

nymph fishing w/indicator = shooting whitetails from a ground blind over bait

dry fly fishing = mule deer hunting

streamer fishing = elk hunting

euro nymphing = turkey hunting, you put a lot of effort into it and think it's cool, but in reality you're just annoying and no one cares about your success.

I think that's a strong effort.

I have a lot of Redingtons but I’d probably have to say Echo is the tikka of the FF world. Redington has gone a little haywire lately (case in point the one pictured above.) But I do agree that if you can’t do a decent cast on a cheap rod you don’t have any business buying a Sage.
I own everything from a Helios to a Sage Sonic, and still to this day my Redington Classic Trout rod is still one of my most fun to fish. They're good rods for the price point.

echo and Redington are fairly terrible.

I don't like them either, but for the money, they're tough to beat.
I had an echo ion XL 6wt for awhile that was borderline unusable. I thought it was strange because I've never had trouble with any fly rod before. maybe I had the wrong line matched to it, either way I moved on from it. Redington can be ok, just not my jam though, Im spoiled with Scott, sage, Abel,Ttibor and galvan.

Dis you see that 5wt shootout that yellow dog made? they tested like almost every 5 weight out there with a fairly strict evaluation process and lots of different people trying the rods...the reidngton trout classic won.
