I have a plan for some things but most of my prep is to deal with the potential inconveniences.

I personally believe very few of us are ready if things really go south. Only the truly mentally strong will handle it imo. That said, I do have a cabin way back in the woods...

We have canned rice, beans, salt, flour, meat, vegies. Garden seeds.
We live in the boonies, so on a septic. Made a well tube that will retrieve 3 gals of water from our well per drop.
Stocked med supplies.
Ammo, check.
Rocket stove, wood supply, check.
Water purifiers, check.
What's gonna get me is lack of fresh donuts, lol.

Take a look at what happened in Bosnia. Not gonna look like what most people think. Just a gradual decline in decent behavior.

Pray to God it never happens.
That is an excellent analogy right there....and look at what happened between the Bosnian/Serbs.

This is one of the best resources out there for "Prepping for less crazy folk". It is long, but talks about what is probable vs what is possible. Big difference in risk assessments for those two things.

"And so, the purpose of this guide is to combat the mindset of learned helplessness by promoting simple, level-headed, personal preparedness techniques that are easy to implement, don't cost much, and will probably help you cope with whatever life throws your way"

And, if you feel the need to go down some rabbit holes:

I find that climate change - probably the most likely thing to cause problems in the near to mid term rarely is mentioned among the prepper types vs far off fantasy stuff like emps.

This is no worse than any other time in our history. Social media just increases the level of paranoia. My family has the skills to survive because we enjoy clean living, no concern of day to day need
Not true, sorry.

We've never seen the gov't as willing to allow people to get beaten, burned out, destroyed and then we watch the revolving door as the perps walk to only do it all again. Gothem City if I ever saw it...
Some of that mentality existed with the racists/LEO in the time of the clan, but universal acceptance of anarchy has never been so pervasive in our culture or country.

And the funny thing is that a vast majority of our citizenry hate that behavior. The few are acting on behalf of the many anymore it seems.

Years ago there were some animated videos on Youtube that were pretty good. One was about preppers and another was about new gun buyers wanting to shoot 1,00 yards.......wish I could find those videos again.

you left out 'high ranking politicians/political organizations' paying the bail for the anarchists.

I feel like I've prepared pretty well for me & my family but you should be much more concerned with being able to defend what you have from those around you. Just take a hard look at a mile radius around you. You gotta sleep sometime.

IMO the AR's are cool but how many of those folks who just bought one recently & stuck it in the closet / safe can actually hit anything with those factory 9lb triggers. My guess is they would burn 10 rounds to hit the same target that we would with one round from a bolt action rifle.
You don't own an AR. Them things are as accurate as your old bolt gun or more so. Plus they can spit lead like a tornado.

I don't own one either - if I ever need one, will get it.

so, in a firefight fire superiority is king. Good luck with your bolt action.

Robtatto summed it up pretty shortly in post #2. Too many scenarios to prepare for to be ready.

That being said, one would be in a better starting place in a rural setting vs urban. Just imagine living in NYC on floor 23 with a grid down. No water, refrigeration, sewerage, elevator, food storage, gasoline, heat, lights and everyone else in the same boat.

On the other hand the Amish do pretty well without electricity.

Putting yourself in the best starting place gives you a better chance to be flexible and use your common sense.

Knowledge will be most important. Experience, reference books, communities banning together to support each others shortcomings and security will win the day.

Countries do not go totally extinct, they evolve into something different. That is what is happening now.

I think an EMP attack by a foreign power is more likely than bombs or military attack. If a foreign entity wants your stuff it is only reasonable to not destroy said stuff. What better way to preserve the stuff but eliminate the enemy than have the enemy destroy itself and just walk in after the criteria is met.

Yes I own "more than one". and they all have been upgraded & outfitted with good optics, better trigger, etc. with an above average stockpile of ammo.
If you read what I wrote I was specifically talking about the person who gets one, shoots a couple rounds & sticks it in the safe. They don't dial it in or get familiar with it & they think they can be like the badass in the movies & make 25 head shots with a 30 round mag. When in actuality they couldn't shoot a 12" group at 100 yds. I'm sure you all know someone like this.

Sorry - misunderstood the post.

I guess it's like that for everyone who buys a gun and doesn't take the time to learn how to shoot. Takes practice for sure.

There is an interesting book called One Second After by William Forstchen. Reasonably well written novel with a fairly thoughtful portrayal of what the world would look like without power (EMP attack). Bottom line is about 1/3 die in 2-3 months from medical complications and 1/3 die in a year from starvation.

I think that pretty early on every fury critter in the woods is going to get shot by hungry hunters. Rinella I think is the one that points out that in places with no functional game regulation and scarce food, there is usually no game due to poaching.

as for me, I don’t plan to let things slowly fall apart. I will be a early mover at the first sign of the apocalypse. I will quickly reorganize my moral positions and plan to go mad max on day one. Looting, pillaging, hockey masks, S&m gear. I basically want to beat the rush and set myself up as a warlord early on.

I think its all about mitigating risks. Always choose less risk to give you a better chance of surviving.

The people that will make it through the worst scenarios will have certain abilities.
Mentally tough, healthy, intelligent, resourceful, excellent woodsmanship...

the most probable disaster will be financial.

i am ready for that. i know a guy that prepped for zombies (i joke). he got injured and had to liquidate EVERYTHING to pay for his bills. selling guns, gear, etc.

i havent seen or heard from him, but it got really bad for him. he had to move into a tiny RV on his friends property. he lost his house that his parents left him when they died.

i prep for that scenario.
