Anyone applying WY general with 4 or more points?

Yep, we don't like the left over tags from the resident quota going into the NR pool . Put those tags in another draw for residents or put them straight into the leftover draw for all to have a chance.

I don’t understand I guess? If the residents didn’t want these tags in the Regular draw, why are they fighting to get them literally a month later in a leftover draw? They are leftover because they themselves didn’t want them? I don’t get that? That’s a great bull! I can’t believe that guy would even ask all that of you! He obviously had a great tag, and he wouldn’t even bring his own gun, made u use your vehicle, etc. some ppl have a lot of nerve and are just plain cheap. I wouldn’t been as gracious as u!

We're allowed 2 buck pronghorn tags, 2 buck deer tags, and 3 total elk tags...the additional tags mostly have to be applied for after the initial draw....

Deep down inside, Buzz hates non-residents. Dont be confused.

This is a stupid ass comment. Even with Buzz disagreeing with me i can recognize the work he does that has benefited NR like me. All residents have a certain level of distaste for NR hunters, but very few go out of their way to help other NR directly, and virtually none advocate on a state level like Buzz does. I don't know the guy one bit, but have benefited and been informed by his posts and have sent emails and made calls due to his posts informing me about things going on.

Remove personal issues and recognize the work put in!

Another NR friend I helped out on pronghorn hunts.

Shortly after he retired:

Unfortunately my friend was diagnosed with Parkinson's shortly after that hunt, but he still made it out and he did well even late into his diagnosis.

My friends last pronghorn, drove 11 hours to attend his funeral a little over a year ago:

I got the feeling his comment was a joke! I don’t think he was being serious

Ok so I understand. So they want more than one tag each w/o having to compete w NR in the leftover draw. I guess I can understand that. A bit greedy but I want two elk tags myself so I can’t fault anyone for wanting multiple tags.

I agree with you about the January deadline for applying, but the later draw date absolutely needed to happen and does make total sense for all kinds of valid reasons. WOGA was not happy about the draw being pushed back, and in a last ditch effort to salvage the "loss" of the early draw, they got the commission to agree to keep the deadline January 31.

Name me another State that:

Gives NR's 25% of their sheep tags
Gives NR's 20% of their moose tags
Gives NR's 20% of their goat tags.
Gives NR's 20% of their bison tags.
Gives NR's 16% of their LQ elk tags.
Gives NR's 16% of their RP cow/calf tags
Gives NR's 20% of their LQ pronghorn tags.
Gives NR's 20% of their LQ deer tags.
Gives NR's 60% of their available pronghorn tags.
Gives NR's a crap load of region wide deer tags.

Drops all the leftover deer and pronghorn tags that aren't issued to R's in to the NR initial draw. Lots of Residents are pushing the GF to change that to another R draw for the leftover quota's BEFORE moving the tags to the second draw or dropping them to the NR's in the initial draw.

What gets tiresome, and really makes me question how hard I want to continue to support NR opportunity here, is when NR's complain and want even more. To the point that I think its well past time for some of the generosity we give NR's needing to be perhaps revisited to come in line with how other Western States treat NR's.

I apply for 8-10 states a year as a NR and I don't get treated that well in any other state I apply in, nor do I see any of the Residents in those other states I apply for clamoring to help increase my opportunities as a NR there. Not that I expect it, but it sure seems a very large disproportion of NR's bitch about not enough opportunity in Wyoming in comparison to other states that are far more restrictive on NR opportunity.
I would also like to add that list Buzz. It always seems to me that it is always glossed over, not thought of or mentioned that we as NR are afforded the luxury to hunt, IMO, the best game managed state there is! I haven't been to every western state everywhere but I've been to many and have seen many. IMO, most states pale in comparison to Wyoming when it comes to game and game management, and that IS worth something. It DOES have value. If someone doesn't recognize that it does its probably the same guy who bitches about what they "can't" do in Wyoming.

I would also like to add that @BuzzH is somebody who should be listened to and not cursed as I see many people often do. Often I wonder if I were him and met with so much opposition and negativity if I'd still be opening up my mouth to state facts, provide good insight and intel on the things we all care about in a hunting community. Yet, he still does, and bravo to him for that. Whether you want to believe it or not, he does have a unique position and does provide a valuable resource for all of us here. People often don't like the answers he gives, even though they are correct. I don't get it. If somebody asked @BuzzH why the sun rises in the east and sets in the west and would like to change it. His answer would be because it just is and good luck changing it. Then everyone will be up in arms about it. Ridiculous.
Furthermore, @BuzzH is a great guy! My wife and I met and spoke with him for hours while we were in Wyoming hunting. His passion is as true as can be. I think about that day often. My avatar is a product of that day and @BuzzH was a part of it. Thank you.

I sure hope Idaho never goes to a point system..

I've talked to alot of ID residents in my time hunting the state, they seem to be in favor. I think the changes this year to the way tags are divided out solely put the blame of all problems on the NR side of things. Kinda of unfortunate if you ask me. I will say however, I've run into and helped/been helped by several great R's though.

With those kind of tags, never need to leave the state. WY is good to its R's that's for sure.

I am a fan of WY hunting as well. They do have some quirks but definitely have some great hunting.

I like the idea of group point averaging for family members to be able to hunt together. The fact that people solicit strangers online for their points tells me that it’s being abused. It’s not right that there’s guys hunting general elk tags with zero points 7 years in a row while a father and son are waiting 4 years to draw to go on one hunt together.

Thomas, to answer your 70,000 Elk tag question, the 7,250 nr limit is for full price Elk licenses. The 70,000 total reference by gohunt includes all Elk licenses. There were 45,313 lq licenses for 2018.

It is what it is. No need to adopt the choose your weapon disastrous method. Next thing you know you guys will want choose your week. I’m not a fan of micromanagement. Keep it simple. If you prefer that you can head on down the road a bit and enjoy those ideas.

There’s a certain number of licenses. If you draw one use it how and when you choose. If you want season or sex specific tags go for a type 6 or 9.

And if someone shares points everyone in the party goes back to the end of the line which means they no longer affect point creep.

Wyoming must be doing something right or we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

Non-residents can also get 3 elk tags. Just cost more.

I'm glad to see someone figured out a way to give preference points some value. Right now they have none other than an imaginary place in a line of unknown length.
I really wish preference points were transferable to heirs. A young person inheriting points might actually get to use them.

Nr's can get the same number of tags as residents for all species.
The leftover resident tags being drawn by nr in the initial drawing will be changing. There will be very high resident support for that. In my home antelope unit of 16, 73% of the tags in the initial draw went to nr. %73! Name another limited quota unit in another western state that issues 3/4 of the tags nr.

I've got five points now, there's basically nothing I can draw now that I couldn't pull two years ago at three points.

The tags that took five when I started are now 7-8.

I could be pulling my second general but instead I'm still sitting in purgatory.

yep! Burn your points!

NR drew them because residents didn't want them.

OK so it appears there is some push back about the weapons segregation and I get that but not many comments on the piggyback of the points...one person above did say that everyone in the group goes back to 0.

Thats fine but what about the guy who has points for his brother, his sister, his wife, his buddy, his buddy's buddy, and so on. He uses those points averaged every single year in essence drawing a primo tag for double the price. Nobody sees something wrong with this? I guess another way to look at it is that the guy is only harvesting one animal and the other tag potentially goes unfilled....so there is that. Just seems a bit shandy to me.

Good conversation and reading on this thread for sure.
