A job has popped up that may be right in my wheelhouse in Ketchum. I know the housing is exceedingly expensive and I would probably be looking 20-30 min south of town. Other than housing issues, is it a good area to raise a kid/live? I'm currently is SW CO, unfortunately my job here is coming to an end.

Wife and I have never been to the area, weather looks similar to our current home, maybe a few degrees cooler year round. We are spoiled with 300 days of sunshine here, curious if Ketchum is similar in that regard. Last, but not least any OTC units in the area for elk, or would I be driving? Thanks in advance!

You can PM me and I'll give you the run down.
It's absolutely beautiful hear BUT it's extremely hard to purchase a home here on the salaries most jobs pay. Homes in Ketchum are a million plus, Hailey is just under a million and Bellevue is probably 600k.
I'll tell you about the schools by PM.
I would come here for a long weekend and see if you like it.

Housing is expensive, jobs for permanent residents while not high paying are plentiful. Schools and government are well funded. Property taxes by percentage are some of the lowest you will find. This is a resort community and attracts a lot of wealthy individuals and the standards and prices reflect that. Politically that county is heavy to the left. Snow fall is close to six months a year. Few years back it snowed on July 4th. Didn’t stick but did snow. All that being said the locals are awesome especially during the off season. The community is tight knit and very helpful. Down to earth types. Unfortunately the community gets very deluded down with tourists during ski season. Don’t know if this helps any.

As for hunting opportunities yes, all around you there are tons of OTC hunting opportunities in Idaho especially as a resident. Check out the Idaho game regs for details. If you can find a place you can afford you would have lots of options living in that area relatively close by.

I spent 20 years in the area and moved out 5 years ago. The country is stunning and it's one of the prettiest places in idaho but the population and prices are ridiculous. One way in and one way out......you'll be sitting in traffic both ways, as in a long time.
And sadly, alot of other areas in idaho are the same.

It's right outside your front door! well, just a little ride and hike but heck here's a picture of our valley. How did you know that was Antz basin? good job!

Been backpacking through there a few times. I thought it was, but I wasn't completely sure. I had to compare it with a picture of mine. I'm down in Twin so it's a bit further drive for me.

I am up the road a bit, but saw more Colorado, Utah and California plates on the road then Idaho plates this weekend between Ketchum and here and most have been driving like the highway is a race track. Love it when they park right on the highway so they can get the hot springs shots for their Instagram. Unreal on the amount of California and Utah plates during the week too.

Fishing is terrible, hunting is terrible, trailheads and hotsprings near the paved roads aren't crowded one bit on the weekends, especially the closer you get to Ketchum and Stanley. From folks I know down there in ketchum, it sounds like rent is outrageous and housing prices are too.

Maybe I'll run into one of you fellas commenting on this thread this year even if we don't know it!

I spend a great deal of time there and could live there in a heartbeat. We’ve looked at getting a studio or 1bedroom just to have a place to go and setup shop, but being only a two-hour drive away makes it easy enough.

I'm in Durango now.... Working on something a little closer to here, but it's a mess.

Thanks for all the replies! Bellevue looked like we might be able to find something in our price range, unless we come into a pile of money I don't think we could look any closer to Ketchum than that.

Housing prices are insane there right now, if you can find a rental thats in your price range, may be a better bet than buying. But you run the risk of having the rental sold and scrambling for another place to live (it’s been happening alot lately).
It’s a great place to live, but you will either love it or hate it. Also culturewise Bellevue is different than Ketchum, same with Hailey. You may find you like Bellevue more than Ketchum.
