How are you guys cleaning and preparing them? I found a spot in a burn last year that had a ton of them but didnt take many of them because I didnt need that many.

Found out I’m allergic to morels: hives all over my body. Maybe worth it.
One of my hunting partners (whom ive found a ton of morels with), suddenly developed an allergy as well. Violently ill each time he tries them now. Cant understand how that happened.

I split them the long way, rinse, and soak overnight in water. Gets the ants and other pests out. Dry on paper towels till completely dry, bag in a ziplock and freeze. I still have dried bags from last year in the freezer and they are great in soups and such.
Of course, eat a ton on the night you get them- sauteed in garlic butter and a few red pepper flakes.
I like your attitude about only taking what you need, but in the case of these, theyll rot before anyone else finds them unless you are in a high traffic area. Now that you know how to dry them and save, you can keep or give as gifts the ones you dont save.
On a related note, i dont like using the dehydrator. Air drying on the towel works the best as far as ive seen.
Best of luck

I am going to try your drying method this year. I usually find a lot around my property and haven't been to successful at preserving them yet. I haven't found any yet, but it should be any day now as my neighbor at a lower elevation is finding them.

A few I found last weekend in southern Illinois while turkey hunting. Cooked em up with some wild turkey breast. Delicious.

Been finding them consistently here in SW Iowa the last 2 weeks. It’s greening up so fast that it’s gonna get hard to find them from here on out

Just spent the past weekend in north central IL. A few buddies were finding them here and there. It was the first warm weekend so my guess is they will be popping of course after I have returned to So Cal. Did manage to cook a small mess up for my wife and kids so they were able to at least have a taster.

Colorado is ready!
