Am I out of line?

I recently sold a pack(bag only). I used the pack once don't remember packing out an animal with it but could have. He gets the pack says there is some blood inside the pack and I forgot to mail the bottom straps that attach to the frame. I am gone bear hunting for a week so I get lots of emails from him which I can understand. Tanya sees them tell him I am gone hunting will respond when I get home. I get home, talk to him, send the straps. He gets the straps and is mad it doesn't have the velcro straps bands. Now I am mad and so is he. I tell him to send it back and I will refund his money and the shipping back to me. The pack sales for $330, I sold it to him for $235. IMO the pack is in great shape even if it has blood or dirt on it.

Am I being unreasonable? What would you as a seller have done?

I would apologize for wasting his time and provide the most immediate refund possible

In these situations when I’m dealing with someone who I can’t deal with I find it most rewarding to get the transaction in the rear view as expediently as can be. 235$ Plus another 20-30 innshipping is a small price to pay to free yourself of a shitty relationship.

I’d buy him a new one if that’s what it took to shut him up. Anything to be rid of him. Too many easy people out there to deal with.

*might apologize “for my part” “ in the tremendous waste of time and resources which the transaction has become”

I’d make a point of letting the guy know he’s not worth your time though. However sideways or pointedly you deem appropriate.

Depends on how you positioned the bag at the beginning. What claims did you make about it and did the bag live up to those claims (reasonably)?

If you said, “XX bag for sale, great shape, lots of life left in it, $235.” It’s up to him to ensure it meets his definition of “great shape,”. You should have sent the straps, but that’s an honest mistake.

Caveat emptor always. When I sell stuff I always say, “ask any and all questions BEFORE bidding, etc. Extra pics on demand.”

I work in sales and it's often best to just make the problem go away in the least rewarding way possible for the problem.

I don't think you are wrong to be annoyed, the buyer seems a bit unreasonable.

Mistakes happen, $235 for a $330 pack is a good deal, even if it is a little dirty. That's why washing machines were invented...

Thanks for the responses.

I try to see things from all angles. I have sold a boatload of gear and never had any issues. So this is new to me even though I deal with these issues daily with our Classifieds, but not my own sales.:)

Not unreasonable. Too many guys out there looking for brand new gear for a discount and used gear for a used price, but in unused condition. I'd tell him to go buy a new pack if he can't handle a used one.

I don't think you did anything out of line. Some people will just never be happy. Velcro straps can be picked up at Walmart for practically nothing and don't seem worth being an a-hole over.

If was was buying a pack for hunting then ideally I would be packing out an animal in it at some point, so if it came with some blood already who cares? A set of Velcro ties costs $5 and I loose them all the time. I don't think you're being unreasonable, I'd do the same, offer a refund if it's that big an issue.

In my eyes when buying and selling used gear, if something is important to the buyer they need to ask about it or clarify it. If not, accountability lies on them. Buyers can't read someone's mind on what their expectations are, so the buyer needs to drive that clarity prior to a deal being struck.

Handled correctly I believe. I have sold and bought lots of stuff here. Never had an issue but I know it’s gonna happen. Luckily for me I have been in sales for 20 years dealing with the public. Through that I realize you’re not gonna please everybody. And some people arent worth pleasing. Best line I ever heard is “if all you sell to is a**hol** one day you will wake up and that’s all that will be around you.” Take it with a grain of salt. Sell the pack to someone who will use it and appreciate it. You just paid a small price to learn someone’s character. Keep up the great work here.

I have had a couple internet sales go south and it usually comes down to a communication problem. The person buying the stuff doesn't know what questions to ask and when they receive the item they are upset because you did not fully disclose the stuff they were wondering about but never ask about. Refund the person and move on and when the day comes they are interested in something else you have tell them thanks but no thanks.

I think you both have some skin in this bad transaction.

A lot of this depends upon the description. Blood stains are commonly asked about or mentioned in the classifieds, so it is reasonable to expect a seller to inspect the item and describe it. I try to include the item and any accessories in the listing. I take pictures that show what comes with it and shows any flaws. I’m sure I put a lot more effort into it than a lot of people do.

I haven’t seen your classified, but my feedback to you would be to think about what you could have spent a few minutes on to avoid the problem entirely.

Well, full disclosure apparently I forget the female buckles that attach to the frame and now he thinks I am pilfering items on purpose. I only have about seven bags laying around that came with different setups.

He's been to Kifaru to get those. I have about 50 of those buckles. I think it was just bad timing on the sale and crapping communication on both ends... and maybe someone with different standards on what used means. He will get a lifetime of use out of that bag.
