Just checked and it was 95 grains retained.I need to load up some 150’s. I think it would be a great deer round.

Awwwww does it hurt somewhere? Need some moisturizer? If you get all furred up over a simple question "name one" you have some serious issues. If you’ve seen this guy interact in other threads, you wouldn’t ask why
And yes, sooooo simple, name a comparable cartridge with the same attributes. Saying 30-06 is not exactly faint praise. In fact a compliment to the 308. The question "name one" was not a multiple choice quiz.Well if you re-read it from the start, as you even quoted here, that’s half of what he said.
You responded with a two word question. He responded back to clarify and I’ll paraphrase, “name one from part one?
Or name one from part two?”
Then you basically responded, “part one, here’s the answer.” Like he should have been able to mind read.
come on Freddy I’ve seen you around this place you got better than that, let me have it. Put your purse awayAwwwww does it hurt somewhere? Need some moisturizer? If you get all furred up over a simple question "name one" you have some serious issues
Heresy, maybe, but the only load I've ever hunted with is Hornady American Whitetail with 150gr Interlocks. I got a stupid deal on a bunch when the local Dick's dropped their FFL side. Probably have another two-three years worth of practice and hunting before I start looking again. Only deer that has gone more than a few dozen yards was a doe I shot in the neck when she sat back and head-bobbed right as I pressed the trigger. Most have gone less than twenty.I need to load up some 150’s. I think it would be a great deer round.

Shot a doe at roughly 350 with that load and the damage was massive. One of my favorite 308 loads everHeresy, maybe, but the only load I've ever hunted with is Hornady American Whitetail with 150gr Interlocks. Not the end-all be-all, but its got a 100% success rate for me in the Indiana deer woods with ranges from straight down to 160-ish yards. Would like to try something at 250ish, but that's hard to come by with a good backstop. Around my parts, anyway.
At the risk of reigniting the dumpster fire: Can do everything better? Incorrect, the 30-06 can't fit in an 84M action. Have had a couple of 84Ls in 30-06, but they're just not the rifle the 84M is and went down the road.I said in an abbreviated form to name one that could. And yes the gun cabinet is a bedroom full of different rifles and cartridges. But I can name one. The 30-06.
.358win.Name one?
My FIL has one I just got dies for, trying to figure out what to load for it.358win.![]()
Hornady 200s are good, Speer 220s are best (unfortunately discontinued, but I understand that the Hawk 220 is as good) & 140-158gr pistol bullets are an absolute hoot, from subsonic through to 22-2400fps. Fyi, a 158gr hornady XTP will go end-to-end through a 110lb hog at 1800fps & recoils like a .22magMy FIL has one I just got dies for, trying to figure out what to load for it
Respectfully, these attributes are trivial and can be said for almost any common cartridge. Barrel life is maybe the only real standout attribute of 308 in the list above. But again, even 2500rds is absolutely adequate for 95% of shooters. And barrels are cheap compared to ammo!!Well, regardless of this weird tit for tat…my opinion is the .308 is a fantastic cartridge…based on my experiences.
- Pretty easy to get a rifle to shoot well with most factory ammo.
- Can shoot a variety of projectiles.
- Shoots well with different barrel lengths.
- Easy to hand load with good results.
- Relatively cheap to reload.
- Great barrel life.
- It’s “inherently accurate.”
- When braked or suppressed, there’s very little recoil.
- And last, but not least….it kills stuff and fills my freezers.
Not trying involved in the argument above when I quote this. But again, nearly any CALIBER has bullets available in a wide range of weights/constructions. For instance, in 243/6mm caliber I can load anything from ~60gr to ~115gr. In 6.5 I could go from ~95gr to ~156gr. 7mm I could go from ~120gr to ~195gr. Any cartridge in any of these calibers could be loaded to hunt varmint or bear/moose. And all would be just as effective or more than 30 cal, with less recoil. The portion that the 308 win has factory ammo available from 110 grains to 180 grains in all flavors of frangible to mono?
Or that most of us could open our gun cabinet and grab several guns that would work fine for whatever hunt we are planning?
Thank you that will give me a good starting pointHornady 200s are good, Speer 220s are best (unfortunately discontinued, but I understand that the Hawk 220 is as good) & 140-158gr pistol bullets are an absolute hoot, from subsonic through to 22-2400fps. Edit to add: the 225 Partitions & A-Frames are a little tough for .358. They're intended for .35 Whelan velocities, although they will work.
Best bullet ever made for it is the Remington Cor-Lokt 200gr, but good luck finding any!
I suppose next you are going to say Santa Claus isnt real.Respectfully, these attributes are trivial and can be said for almost any common cartridge. As far as grabbing several guns, I could also grab several guns chambered in the same cartridge.... or I could grab the correct ammo for whatever gun I grab.
I just don't get the obsession with 308 as somehow MORE useful, flexible, effective, accurate, you name it than any other widely adopted cartridge. In reality it's too underpowered to shoot high BC 30cal bullets, which really BEGIN around 200gr+. And therefore you are stuck throwing suboptimal bullets with more recoil and less downrange performance.
For example: the 6mm 108gr Elite Hunter has nearly the same BC as the 30cal 180gr Elite Hunter, and I can get it 100fps faster in 4" less barrel out of my 6CM than I could with my 308. It has 1/3 the recoil and BETTER downrange ballistics. And it kills like a bear on cocaine. The 308 hype makes 0 sense.

@Formidilosus - Ryan said on the latest podcast that you said something along the lines of "everyone should have a 308 hunting rifle".
Given you've posted many times here before about recoil differences with smaller calibers, what's the reason for this? Availability? Being familiar with a classic? Learning wind with a "slow" cartridge ... or something else?
