That and when people ask - did you catch any (insert any animal) this year?
Wild game is a renewable resource that we grow and manage. We do the same with trees and crops that we harvest. I dont see any issue with using the term for deer or elk.
When we talk about fawns we say we had a good or bad fawn crop. We harvest crops.
Seem like you using tagged and me using harvested are very very similar.I have coworkers that do this. I tell them I didn’t catch anything, but I did kill something!
I wouldn’t say wild animals and trees are not the same category. A higher power is more in control than us people with the wild animals. Yes we have rules and statistics and try and do our best to manage things for the better. If we were in control of growing and harvesting wild animals, why do we let so much drought, wildfire, and winter kill happen? Seems a poor way to manage your crops with all that loss doesn’t it? Why do we let so many predators put such a dent in populations during birthing season? Doesn’t seem like a good way to tend your crops.
I’ll try and use the term “tagged” or “filled a tag” when I can.
That is correct if being used as a noun maybe. if you scroll down and use it as a verb you'll see otherwise. Then if you keep scrolling there are even more options!
Intentions may be the same, wording is not Honestly harvested is not something that bothers me much, but it’s the least liked term right behind catch! It’s the guys on the gram that are ruining that term.Seem like you using tagged and me using harvested are very very similar.
Harvest has multiple meanings, including the season when crops are ready to be gathered, the act of gathering crops, and the crops that are gathered:
You take your technicalities and leaveHarvest has multiple meanings, including the season when crops are ready to be gathered, the act of gathering crops, and the crops that are gathered:
- Season: The time of year when crops are ripe and ready to be collected.
- Activity: The act of gathering crops, plants, animals, or fish as food.
- It’s pretty simple lol
You mean you don’t put a leash on your pack and take it out for a run?Interesting.... you think a majority of people that say harvest are doing so because they are actually afraid of saying "KiLL"?
To me that's not as bad as people who say:
I'm running this pack or running this spotter or running that tripod
We are not in control of growing anything. Mother nature can and will wipe us out at will. Game agencies and private landowners do a lot to mitigate those very things you list though. So by your example you have listed the things we actively do to grow and manage this renewable resource. Sure animals die from those things, you cannot eliminate them, but millions are spent to mitigate them. Habitat management is another thing we actively do to grow animal herds. Lots of time and money spend growing animals just so people can shoot them.If we were in control of growing and harvesting wild animals, why do we let so much drought, wildfire, and winter kill happen? I'm the other way on this. I think it is harvesting. We are taking something to eat it, well, I am anyway.Am I the only one bothered when hunters say they "harvested" an animal?
We aren't farmers. We are hunters. We kill the animal and harvest the meat. Why are we so afraid to say the word kill?
You must live in a better state than me and I didn’t mean us humans just sit back and do nothing. There are certain states like you mentioned that without them and the private crowd putting in their part…numbers the following year would be pitiful. Generally states are more concerned about someone stepping off the trail on a flower than the correct way to manage forests or actually putting fish and wildlife finding to proper use. But we won’t even start on any of that…We are not in control of growing anything. Mother nature can and will wipe us out at will. Drought - we spend a lot putting in water sources
Wildfire - lots of work is done to reseed and restore habitat
Winter kill - lots of states have feeding programs
Predators - lots of states have predator management programs
We cant remove these factors any more than a large rancher can keep 100% of his cows alive. That doesn't mean one isn't tending their crops.
While I dont use the term harvest, I agree that it is harvesting.I'm the other way on this. I think it is harvesting. We are taking something to eat it, well, I am anyway.
I think people that overuse "kill" are trying to make it something more than it is.
Bonus points for abiding.I'm the other way on this. I think it is harvesting. We are taking something to eat it, well, I am anyway.
