6mm /.243 hunting success on Big Game

My 15 year old daughter killed a cow elk at 419 yards (last range) with her Tikka T3x .243. Factory Hornady ELDX 90gr. SilencerCo Scythe and Spartan Ascent tripod.
Shot was high and a little back, but that was my call error on The Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40

We were exposed and only had a old wire fence to use as cover. The cows were not liking us creeping in and started to get moving when we tried to get to the corner of the fence. That was about 400 yards from the herd. With the Scythe and the open pasture the shot was so quite. Hardly a impact thwap, the cow just bolted and the rest of the herd took off after her. My daughter said " I hit her." I said " yes, just wait" I had my glass on the cow the whole time.
About six seconds later she dropped. High fives and lots of stoke.

I am impressed with the 90gr ELDX. First time killing with it in the .243 It punched right through the cow. It was not a perfect shot and it killed very quickly. Shot was from a tripod at 400+ yards kneeling in wind and light snow. We were a little rushed due to conditions. The little .243 never lets us down. Currently building a Tikka 6CM

No signs of lung jelly, but appears some fragments of bullet went through lungs. Daughter snapped this pic while I was working. Not the best document of damage.

Before and after of a 105gr Berger VLD.
3050 muzzle velocity, 125 yards on hard quartering to whitetail buck, close to straight on.
Entered forward front of shoulder, splintered/shattered scapula into multiple fragments, into back strap and stopped against spine after traveling total of 14 inches.
Ending weight 46 grains.
Deer was dropped on the spot.

I shot a long action Remington in 240 a lot, what a spectacular killer that was, 95 grain ballistic tips were the bomb
Toasted that barrel in about 900 rounds but what a blast
Something about those long slender rounds out of a Remington feeds so sweet
Maybe the Weatherby clone is in my future

Did you handload those? If so, how was the cartridge to reload? It honestly sounds like if done in a fast twist barrel it might be the fastest standard bolt face 6mm cartridge.

It was about 20 years ago and I wasn’t big on keeping records then but it was a breeze to load for
I had a die that swaged 25/06 brass down and formed the belt so brass was cheap and plentiful
Remington action and a Maddco barrel so it was always going to work

I was never drawn in by the weatherby lure. Couldn’t bring myself to pay the prices they charged when there were cartridges out there killing animals just as efficiently for a fraction of the price. Don’t get me wrong though the weatherbys have some undeniable horse power and for anyone who feels the need for speed they are where it’s at.

Awesome! Would you by chance know the impact velocity of that load? I have an accurate load with the 90 grain ELDX in my 6 ARC, but elected to hunt with the 108 ELDMs. The 90 grain would have less drop.

What velocity are you getting with the 90 ELDX in your 6 ARC? Looks like 2900 to 3000 should be achievable.

For reference. I’d think I can get the 90ELDX to 2800 in 16”. This is the ELDX COAL into lands in my barrel. And 95tmk for reference.

I was closing in on 2800fps with the TMK at 2.315” which was .020 off for me.

Cow elk at 441 yd. 109 ELD @ 2975 fps at launch via 243, ~ 2350 fps at impact. Watched impact, didn’t get a presentation I liked for a follow up in the few seconds she remained on her feet.

Considered using it for NRL Hunter Factory, but after comparing to a Seekins I decided to use it for hunting instead.
