270 Success on big game.

The .270 is the best caliber IMO. Hits a perfect sweet spot even better than the 7mm. It just gets a bad rep because of its lack of military support and the fact it is not named in a metric fashion.

I would not say it's the Best all around caliber but would agree that it is a really good caliber for deer sized game at conventional hunting ranges. The mule deer buck I shot last Fall in Wyoming would probably agree.

Caliber entrance behind shoulder, IIRC onside lung minimally damaged, back half of offside lung vaporized with multiple bullet peices exiting and 8"+ wide of trauma. This deer went 5 steps and piled up in seconds.

Not that I'd consider this spike a "big" game, but shot him with 270win using 130gr Hornady SST factory ammo at 100 yards. He reared up on impact then ran 15 yard before a backflip and dead. Lungs were both demolished.

Owned Savage 270 for 26 years. Lots of deer, 130 grain reloads. Two black bears, 150 grain round nose. Never had to track an animal.

I’ve been lurking all around this forum for quite a while and this seemed like the perfect time to share a fun story. An “uncle” of mine gave me a JP Sauer Model 200 chambered in .270 Win when he got too old to hunt anymore. The rifle was his baby and he had killed 33 deer with it. I made it my mission to bring the total to 34 and was successful last year. He couldn’t have been happier when I shared the story with him!

Most of the animals I have shot over the last 45 years has been with a 270 win with 140 gr Hornady BTSP over 53.5 gr IMR 4350. Elk, Moose, goat, sheep, deer, bear and caribou have never argued that it was enough gun.

I also shoot a 270 WSM and again always more than enough gun. That one shoots 140gr NAB over 61.7 gr R22.
I do like the 270, but I have also shot 7mm (7.08), 30 cal (06, 300 Savage and 300 RUM) and 358 (358 Win) and enjoy them all.

My good friend shoots exclusively a .270. He has been using 145 Eldx lately and before that sierra game kings 140's I think. I love the .270 caliber, I like the market trend right now correcting for the heavy for caliber bullets with faster twist rates. I'd like to see more options going forward for the .270 as far as bullets and fast twist rates. Surely Hornady will produce a heavier Eldx / Eldm for the market trend? It would be neat.

The 6.8 western intrigues me and would like to see it catch on and gain some more support going forward. I would love to build a .270 AI shooting the new 144 gr Cayuga from Patriot Valley, that would be a deadly round with low recoil and great efficiency.

Anyways my good friend has had great success with mule deer so far with that 145 and I do think it lives in a sweet spot between the heavy hitters and the lighter side.

Although I've shot 2-3x as many animals with my .270 vs 6.5 Creedmoor, I haven't seen much difference between the two. If I'm being honest, the 6.5 kills have been a little more dramatic, but I believe that is due to the bullets I've been using.

I shoot exclusively Kimber 270WSM, I have both the Classic and the Montana and they both shoot lights out, Winchester Deer season 130 gr. All Az WT deer. All (3) of my kids shoot the same rifle and have shot deer like these ranging from 350-485. We have also dropped 8 cow elk with the same rifle ranging from 50-200yds.

Sorry, no pics. (A lot) Older than most of you, I grew up in the JOC age. I've killed my share of game with the .270 Win, never a single second of lost confidence or any doubt about it getting the job done, as in right now. A work-horse in its own right! While 30-06 owners can all say the same, the .270 Win strikes an even better, truly wonderful balance of manageable recoil and enviable ballistics. The 270 has earned the faith given by its loyal fans, yours truly being one. An absolute joy to hunt with, a trustworthy companion. If the .243, 25-06, Creedmore & 7mm08 are all good (& they are) the .270 Win is just mo' better. Like it or not Elmer, Jack was right about the .270 Win. Whether the shot be close or far, effectiveness confirmed countless times round the world by happy owners.

My dad and I have been using 270win for years now and haven't been disappointed yet. We practice a lot a distance but had never really taken anything further than 350 yards. This past November my dad was able to take a Utah cow elk at 560 yards and it dropped with one shot. It rolled down the hill and stopped moving about 20 seconds after the shot. 150gr berger vld @2940fps.
