301 yards, 150 Nosler Long Range Accubond, 7-08. 2740 at the muzzle, 2325 impact velocity just behind the shoulder. Complete passthrough. Ran about 30 yards uphill stopped, stood still about three seconds and then tumbled down.

My kids got 4 more whitetail deer and an axis deer with their 7mm-08 rifles last weekend in Texas. I am switching bullets though. They have been using Hornady custom lite 120sst which have been fine on whitetail and even their mule deer, but my daughter shot an axis deer in the high shoulder and it dropped, rolled on the ground, got up and ran into the thick brush. We were bummed. Not a drop of blood. We searched for a while, but never found it. I’m guessing that sst blew up or something. They have been pretty decent so far. I have 120 nbts and 120 ttsx to start reloading for them.
First picture is looking through the exit and entrance on an 80 lb (gutted) doe after the shoulders were removed. It literally put a 2-3” hole through the entire chest cavity. One shoulder was completely shattered. Second is exit on my son’s 60 lb axis after the shoulder was removed. Great blood trails on 3 deer, 2 dropped where they stood, 1 dropped and then got away.

Nice work on the best wild venison known to mankind! I personally have no use for SST's in any caliber for the reasons you listed. You'll love the 120 BT performance.

The 120BT grouped really well in mine over Varget. Do you have any experience with this bullet on elk? Anecdotal comments and some detailed kills from a fella on LRH say they're excellent on elk, but Nosler does not recommend, instead pointing a guy at partitions and accubonds.

I personally do not, just on game up through aoudad size including some nice big mature rams. There was a guy over on 24HCF, outdoor writer S Timms IIRC that reportedly killed numerous elk and a few moose with the 120 BT. I wouldn't be surprised though, as it is a really tough, accurate bullet.

One bad shot placement into "no man's land", as it's called. Close enough to CNS to temporarily paralyze, but don't hit vitals.
The light 120 SST are fine out to 250ish yards.

My son shot a spike quartering away at 60 yards. 2800fps, it went in through the front of the stomach and out the left front shoulder with a baseball sized exit with a wad of stomach grass plugging the hole. Looked like he was hit with a 300wm. Stood for a minute wobbly and dropped dead.

I load dang near the same in my dad’s 7x57 and he gets the same result. He has only shot antelope but gets a lot of damage.

I'm pretty sure it hit some vitals and that deer is dead somewhere in there, but it's not just that. I have never found more than just some copper jacket left of those bullets and lots of lead spread throughout the meat. I just want a little tougher bullet.

The lady shot this particular bull three years ago. 310 yards, 140 grain Berger VLD Hunting. Upper triangle and smashed the offside shoulder. Down in 30. I have now switched over to handloading Barnes TTSX and LRX and have had great success on mulies and elk. I am always impressed every time she fills a tag with this cartridge for sure.

I may give it another go in that case. We're getting 2628 MV in her 18" barrel with 162 ELDX, so may be able to gain some MV and reduce some recoil with the 120.

My wife shot a raghorn last October with a 120 NBT. MV 3000, shot was 80 yards slightly quartered to, broke the on side leg below the shoulder blade, clipped the heart and hammered the lungs, the bullet stopped on the off side rib cage if I remember correctly. Gutless method so I didn’t go looking for the bullet. He ran 20 yards and tipped over. After one elk and a few whitetails, I’d definitely recommend giving it a try.

My son killed 9 deer with the 7mm-08 and the Hornady Custom Lite loads. They were fine if they were shot through the ribs and didn't hit bone. Hit bone or spine they made a mess and the bullet shredded. Once they can take a full power load, there are much better bullets for the cartridge in the same weight class. We still have a couple hundred of the Lite loads to use for varmints and steel practice.

If you want low recoil with a little tougher bullet, the 120 gr Nosler ballistic tip is great. It is tougher that the 140 gr.
