Got the call about 30 minutes from Mile High Shooters.
Tikka 6.5 PRC on the way.

But we are chopping corn and cutting soybeans and I leave this weekend for Wyoming so won't get to play with it.

The hornady stuff is surprisingly slow. Barely 50fps faster than a creedmoor. Shoots good though. Copper creeks loads spit them out around 3075-3150 though. They just weren’t amazingly consistent and they were on the hot side causing sticky bolt. This was all shot out of a seekins havak. Rifle is a friends who does not reload. I’d like to see what it could do loaded for properly.

Barely 50 FPS faster than factory creedmoor ammo with same bullet out of same length barrel?

No. He’s doing what everyone does, and that is compare extremely hot hand loaded Creedmoor with factory PRC. Factory to factory there’s 200+ FPS difference.

Apples to apples you can run 147s nearly 2900 fps from a 24" CM and the same bullet around 3100-3200 FPS from a PRC from what I've seen.

Personally I don't see me of running these thin jacketed bullets well above 3K FPS. Just don't see them being a good option if a critter jumps out less than 200 yards away. But I hope I am wrong and look forward to reports. Now on the other end the extra 200 fps does mean the 147 drops below 1800 fps around 1100 yards rather than 900 yards and does drop 1.2 MILs less and drift .2 MILs less a 10 mph wind at 900 yards as well.

That’s why I like the PRC- 1,100-1,200 yards with acceptable terminal performance in an 8.5lb package.

I’m ok with a bit splashy up close, and there’s always Berger VLD’s which I have no issue with through bone.

The old "6.5 Creedmoor offers 300 WM ballistics" comparison eh. Maybe comparing factory 300 WM 180 gr partition ammo at 56k PSI pressures vs 140 ELD @ 67k PSI hand load.

The Tikka is set up as a long action in order to try the 150's. It has a 8 twist Bartein though, so I will just have to try them.
I have some 147's and am sure they will shoot but at prc speeds not sure about the terminal results up close.
My shots can range from covey of Quail close to the far side of an open grain field.

I can always convert it right back into a short action and shoot 127 Barnes lrx completely through animals.

Since the PRC cases aren't as fat as the WSM/SAUM, i'd be interested to hear how they feed out of factory Tikka LA Magnum magazines. Be nice if they ran smooth from factory unmodified mags.

Yes it would.
Make a conversion easy.
The 300 WSM cases with longer bullets fed well out of the MDT 338 magazine before the barrel change. I think the PRC will as well but have no proof yet.
With the Tikka, long action and short action part swaps are easy with not a lot of money involved, so there will be combination that will work.

My barreled action is supposed to show up at my FFL's tomorrow. I leave thursday for first rifle elk. Won't have time to do load work before I go, so I'll grab a couple boxes of factory ammo in the morning and try to wring it out so I can use it for elk. If it don't work out, the Creed will get the nod again.

I'll be interested to know this as well. I have a 300 WM Tikka that might end up becoming a 6.5 PRC. Hopefully either the factory mag or the 5 round mag I have from Mountain Tactical will feed the PRC rounds nicely.

Shook it out today. Easiest. Sight-in. Ever....

2 at a 100. Shot, adjusted up and right for a 200 yd zero. Shot, adjusted a bit more. Then fired 3 at 200. First 5 rounds outta the rifle....

100 yd, first 2

the first 3 at 200.

I think it turned out great. I shall name him Percy. Short for P.R.C. McBighorn. My new Irish stepchild.

Very nice! Is that a prefit? Factory ammo?

6.5 prc certainly has peaked my interest. I've been looking for the "one" caliber to drop the coin on for a custom rifle. This might be it.
