6.5 Creedmoor/260 for Deer, Elk, and whatever else.....

6.5 Creedmoor, 143 eldx, 339 yards. He stumbled about 30 feet and then stood there wobbling around. I put an unnecessary second shot in his neck and he crumpled. No internal pictures, but they really didn’t look any different than all the other pictures we’ve seen on this thread. I hit mid shoulder at a downward angle. Bullet had heavily expanded by the time it was through the shoulder, and there was nothing but some fragments on the lower rib cage on the offside. Nothing made it through the off hide.
No complaints!IMG_1237.jpeg

How well does that brake tame the recoil? Spot your impacts?

Recoil is very mild. I’m a little hit and miss on spotting impacts, but I do blame a lot of of that on the cheap vortex scope. SFP 4x-16x, with no dialing capabilities, so anything with a hold over, I’m running it full power…😏
Hoping to put a suppressor on it in the future, but I would like a better scope before that. The budget has not yet allowed for either.
The break is a Heartbreaker from Timber Creek.

Guys shooting factory ammo - what are you seeing out of 18-20” tikkas? I just acquired a 6.5 creed on a screaming deal locally and while I’m tempted to rebarrel it to 6 creed, I’m wondering if I don’t just chop and thread the 6.5 down and shoot it.

For reference my 20” PRC is shooting factory around 2730. I’d expect closer to 2500 out of creed but maybe not?

Bullet weight matters. My 20" 6.5cm is shooting 130's @ 2890 fps. Gets me to 700-750 yards depending on DA

My tikka 20" barrel is shooting the factory 143 eldx at 2560

You’re right- I should be more specific. 140-147 grain bullets. I don’t want to reload - just something to get to 600 yards. Just trying to gauge if the extra 2” of barrel will translate into any extended performance. I plan to suppress it - I know what an 18” 6creed gets me but that will cost me another $4-500 for a barrel

I’m seeing around 2510 with factory hornady 140 ELDM out of my 18” T3X.
2580 with AAC 140 BTHP.
I was in the same boat and decided to just chop and thread my 6.5 and spend the money on ammo, I don’t regret it.

Does "DA" stand for density altitude? Is that more influential on ballistics than temp / humidity?

Density altitude is a single number that takes into account temp, pressure, and humidity, as opposed to three separate inputs.

DA can also be determined in the field with a simple paper chart, which can be an invaluable advantage to not reliant on electronics.

18.5” shooting factory 147’s@2550 with ~1.1 MOA 10 shot groups.

Thanks. I'll read through that thread.

I'm pretty new to all of this. I took my 6.5 CM Tikka to a 900 yard range the other day (first time shooting anything past 100 yards), and a guy walked me through how to calculate dope on a Kestrel. It was a blast and I got a first round hit on the 900 plate after confirming zero at 100. I've been messing around with the Applied Ballistics app on my phone since. I'll be taking that rifle on a hunt next week, but I'm not sure any of these variables will make much of a difference at the max 2-300 yard ranges I expect.

But about that, in Applied Ballistics, it looks like Density Altitude auto-updates whenever I click the wifi-looking icons below Temp, Humidity, and Pressure (I assume the app is pulling data from a local weather station).

I think the CM really shines with the 130 gr bullets. The heavier 147 and up seem to do well in PRC. Either way, I am sure you would be around 1800 fps or more at 600 with just about any of the 130-147gr 6.5's.

I was getting 2550 with factory 140 Eldm in a 18” super lite barrel and suppressor.
