Seeing that the 223 thread is such a success, I thought maybe I would start one for the Creedmoor/260. Seems like people are asking a lot about using them and various bullets, especially for elk. I've used mine for the last few years almost exclusively. I have some pics of bullet damage, albeit...

It's all about the bullet and the velocity, not the head stamp.

If I can shoot a moose with a 150 grain .308 Accubond and it works (it works great, BTW), you can damn sure shoot an elk with a 140 grain Accubond out of a 6.5 and expect it to work great.

Other bullets besides Accubonds work great too, they just happen to be what I mostly have used.

I’ve only shot 2 elk with mine, both cows at 359 and 409 yards. Worked great. I don’t know how many deer I’ve killed with it. Works every time. I use Hornady Precision Hunter 143 grain eldx.

338 win mag is bare minimum for elk, preferably a 338 Lapua or a 50 cal

6.5 CM is a bit overkill but it'll work if that's all you got, keep it behind the shoulder so you don't ruin too much meat.

It may work, as long as its not a rut crazed bull. Those things basically have bullet proof vests on at that point.

It’s about 200 fps slower than a 270 with the same weight bullet, which is only 100 yards different. If the 270 is a giant killer at 500 yards, the 6.5 should do it just as well at 400.

On a more serious note, just take whatever you have or whatever you want to shoot (preferably 6.5cm or smaller) and just go hunt them. Use just about any bullet other than solid copper. You’ll gain experience and an understanding of how and what you want to shoot them with. Do not fall into the trap of needing x big caliber/cartridge

If you shoot a bullet like ELDM, ELDX, TMK then what ever range your bullet is at 1800 fps is a good rule of thumb. Often times that is further than most people can make shots (first round hits)

In my rifle, that’s well beyond 600 yards. I’ve not yet bothered to chase it all the way out, because it is far beyond what I am currently capable of shooting!

Depends on what bullet and load and barrel length and MV and also what elevation you're hunting at and what minimum velocity floor you're willing to go to.

But wherever the answer ends up will almost certainly be somewhere well past the typical shooter's effective range.

I mean a 147eldm shot at 2700' mv at 10k' altitude will retain 1800'+ out to 1000 yards or beyond. Launch the same bullet at 2600' from down near sea level and it'll stay above 2000' out to maybe 475 yards. So it really depends on a lot of things, none of which matter until the shooter is capable of making field shots out past 500 yards.

I'd huck lead at any distance I can a) reasonably shoot under the current conditions (can vary wildly depending on the conditions), and b) which the bullet is north of about 2k FPS for a bonded core, or 1800-ish for a cup/core (eg: ELD-X and friends).

The limiting factor is almost always a), LOL. I can literally only ever think of once in my entire 25+ years of hunting that I looked at a shot and thought "I could make that shot technically, but I'ma pass because I'm not comfortable with a light for caliber AccuBond getting there at only 1850 FPS or so". Every other shot I've ever passed on was because I wasn't comfortable/confident in the shot under whatever the conditions at the time were.

I have always used 300 win for elk, this year I tried my tikka 6.5 with a 16.5 inch barrel and a can on it using a 143 eldx. Speed out of the barrel is only 2480. Shot this bull this year in a new unit at 465 yards x2. Both shots were broadside behind the shoulder. Bull went 12 yards and dropped. Both bullets were found inside the opposing hide. Breaking through ribs of both sides. So, overall super happy with its performance and it was MUCH easier to do a security follow up shot compared to my 300 win, which I'll probably want to sell

Is it possible with the 300 Win mag a follow up shot would not have been needed? And it is also possible it doesn't take much to kill with a bullet through the lungs.
